My name is Jan and I am from Memphis. I started my soap making business

in February, 1998 and am totally addicted to it. Everyone including

myself is surprised at how well it has taken off. I like to read about

other's sucesses and failures in order to help me. I look forward to

this list.

Hi. My name is JoAnn White and our farm, herd name and business name is

Cedar Acres Dairy Goats. I am presently milking a herd of 17 does. We have

Nubians and LaManchas and a few recorded grades. We are licensed to sell

goat cheese and soap. I make a very basic goats milk/ honey soap using the

cold process method. We sell mostly off the farm but do a farmers market in

the summer where we sell the soap and cheese.I look forward to learning more

about soap making. Thanks.

HI! My name is Dawn and I am pretty new to the soap making craft. I would

love to learn more about it!!! My husband and I are origionally from Ohio,

but the Army says we now have to live in Texas. We've been here 7 years and

have 3 kids. I can't wait to get some cool recipes for all types of soaps.

My husband and I made one batch before, but that's about it. He's away right

now, so I have plenty of time and want to try some different recipes. Right

at this moment I am taking a break from rendering some tallow on the stove so

I can make " Basic White Soap " out of a book that I borrowed from my

girlfriend. This rendering thing is a first for me!! Wish me luck!!! -Dawn

Well, I'm only 2 weeks behind on my email!! LOL I just found this hidden in

the mess!! Actually, I have it almost all done.......I'm down to 83

emails.........I started at 606! I got my rendering instructions out of

Coney's book.. I tried her tallow recipe and it didn't turn out well at all!

BUT, that may have been because I had a REALLY lousy scale. It's my

understanding that tallow comes from beef suet which is around the kidneys.

Anything other than that will be a pain to work with and may give an inferior

tallow. I really don't know........I'm a newbie! I just put it through the

grinder on my KitchenAid and then boiled it for HOURS and HOURS with water.

When there were no more chunkies in there I poured it thru a sieve into a pan

and put it in the freezer. Then the next day I unmolded it, scraped off all

the impurities and put it in a ziploc bag and stuck it in the freezer. I

don't know what I am going to use it for right now, but there's no hurry, cuz

it will keep. I don't know about the lard thing. That's from pigs if I

understand right, and from what I've seen it has a different SAP Value, so I

don't know if it can be used interchangably. I am too new at this to even

guess about something like that. Anyone have the scoop on the

differences/similarities between lard and tallow???
