Guest guest
My 5 month old daughter has been in her band since Wednesday. This morning, when I took off the band her head was bright red, swollen, and the skin was CRUSTED! I called the clinic, but no one is there today. I will keep it off her head until it subsides, but I was wondering if anyone has had such a crazy reaction? What did you do? Lea
Guest guest
Lea, This does not sound good. Is it possible it was a heat rash? Of course I've never heard of heat rash coming on that strong and fast. I think there was one little girl who did have an allergic reaction to the liner, sorry I don't know what they ended up doing. Is it possible she has a virus? You might want to call the dr who referred you or your ped. He/she will probably have someone on call and then you won't have to wait until Monday. I would suggest using 1% hydrocortizone cream but in this case I think you should talk to an ortho or dr first. If it's heat rash or an allergic reaction the cream would probably help. If it is an allergic reaction there could be a reaction to the cream too. Please keep us updated. In the mean time I would leave the band off. mom to na DOC Grad SCakamomof3 <mad_molly@...> wrote: My 5 month old daughter has been in her band since Wednesday. Guest guest
, thanks for replying. I put on some elidel and am waiting to see how that works. It's now 9:30 pm my time and her rash is not any better. A large portion of the yellowish/orangeish crust came off only to reveal worn, irritated, open skin. Ugh! It's just awful. I don't know what they refer to as " skin breakdown. " I fear this may be it. I have called my ped and she said to wait to talk to the craniotech people. My clinic doesn't have anyone on call, so I am stuck until monday. When she gets up at midnight, I may put the band on for the night and remove it again when she gets up around 4am. I am so afraid of taking steps backwards. Ugh! Lea
Guest guest
Hi Lea Hope your little one has had an ok nihgt. To second what has said, I really really would leave that band off. The problem will only get worse if you dn't and then you might find she is out of the band for a week waiting for the skin to heal. I had a lot of trouble with my daughter's skin early on with heat rashes. They were bright red and very itchy, but they never crusted over like that. I kept her very very cool (heating turned down so you are cool), dressed incredibly lightly( no socks, just a onsie or light cotton clothes) and took the band off at the first sign of trouble. If you have a child with a sensitive skin for whatever reason, you really do need to whip that band off whenever you see them get a bit flustered, touch the band to itch, or you see any redness. That way it calms down pretty quickly (within an hour or so) and you don't lose days out of the band. Also, I was advised to go easy on the alcohol, only once a day with a damp (not wet) cloth and plain old elbow grease (scrub away!)Again, alcohol can irritate a sensitive skin. It sounds like your daughter's reaction is more extreme, but it may be worth following these tips as getting too hot and using too much alcohol won't help, whatever the underlying problem. If you do this and the problem persists, it may be there is an allergy to the band liner as suggests, in which case you need to take advice from the orthotist on what to try. I know it is soooo frustrating to keep your little one out of the band when her skin is like this. I know it feels like every second counts, however, I know myself that's just not possible sometimes. My daughter had over three weeks out of the band due to a series of fevers in a four month period, and still saw complete correction of 2.3cm asymmetry. It's just the way it goes sometimes. My concern is that if you keep putting the band back when there is any soreness or open skin, it may get to the stage where she can't wear it for a week or at all. Guest guest
Lea, So how did it go last night? Did you put it back on? Open skin is not a good thing. I've never heard of skin breakdown that quickly. It's very strange. I would definitely let her head heal a bit more before putting it back on. I know Monday won't come soon enough. mom to na DOC Grad SCakamomof3 <mad_molly@...> wrote: , thanks for replying. I put on some elidel and am waiting to see how that works. Guest guest
Hi Lea You could try a low dose hydrocortisone cream. I would leave the band off till you hear from the clinic as well though, or if you put it back on I would go for hr on, and hr off to see what is happening Sandy Willow's Mom --- In Plagiocephaly , " akamomof3 " <mad_molly@m...> wrote: > > My 5 month old daughter has been in her band since Wednesday.
