Guest guest
Hi, Kathy...well, if you really gained weight on lowcarbing you're pretty unusual. How long did you try it? And did you watch your portion sizes? Anyway, I'm glad you're on insulin...that's really the best way to gain control. But do be aware...the more carbs you eat, the more insulin you require. It makes more sense to me to keep the carbs lower and require less insulin. BTW, what kind of insulin are you taking? There's absolutely no reason you need to eat only " a little wee bit of meat " . Meat -- and chicken and fish, etc. -- don't have any carbs and don't raise your BGs at all. If you haven't read " Dr. Bernstein's Diabetes Solutions " by K. Bernstein, M.D., I strongly suggest you do so. He also has a website, the URL is http://www.diabetes-normalsugars.com/index.shtml Another excellent basic book is " The First Year: Type 2 Diabetes, An Essential Guide for the Newly Diagnosed, " by Gretchen Becker. These books may straighten out any confusion you have. Guest guest
well, my doctor was impressed today. i've gained 2 pounds. lol so, he said to low-carb (and gave me a breakdown of the percentages i should have on the calorie count), and said to keep my calories at 1400. i think i was snacking some when hungry, and those little snackies were adding up. and of course, the kid gloves came off today and i'm told i HAVE to exercise. he was cutting me some slack after mom died, but no longer. lol so, tomorrow will be the first day of the new lifestyle. i have a messy journal, but he wants to see it next time. i love the book you mentioned. i took it and was reading at the doctor's office. there's some technical stuff that goes over my head, but it's very informative, thus far. i still think i'm gonna head to a nutritionist. i feel kinda like i walking blind even with the help of this list, so i think that might be worth the $$$ to just have someone sit with me, see what my journal is showing, and head me in the right direction. i want off meds (and doctor says that's very close to happening), and want to be " normal " again--meaning testing often, but not 12 times a day. pat > The First Year: Type 2 Diabetes, An > Essential Guide for the Newly Diagnosed, " by Gretchen Becker. Guest guest
Hi, Pat...well, I'm glad to hear your doc recommended lowcarb...just make sure the nutritionist you see -- and it should really be a CDE (Certified Diabetic Educator) is following the same line. All too many follow the ADA party line of " exchanges " which is definitely NOT lowcarb. Yes, you really need to start exercising! 20 minutes of walking a day is a good start and relatively painless...does your library have Books on Tape? That's an excellent motivator for me...I only listen to them when I'm exercising and if it's a good book sometimes I go even longer than my planned exercise time, smile. And if your library doesn't have books on tape, you can rent them by mail for a pretty reasonable fee. ....and watch those snackies! Guest guest
actually, i don't thihnk he recommended. i just informed him that my email buddies on a diabetes list recommended it, and i was following their advice. he did not say " get away from the computer " or the things the nasty doctor said, but said i needed to control calories and exercise. he did not tell me to go to an educator, but i think for me, i need one. it's just not registering what to eat and what not. i got home too late to call today, but i will call tomorrow. i actually want to ask his nurse (i forgot today) to recommend one. pat > > Hi, Pat...well, I'm glad to hear your doc recommended lowcarb...just make > sure the nutritionist you see -- and it should really be a CDE (Certified >
Guest guest
i just got AARP, but right now, nothing is covered but hospitals. i need to up my coverage to include doctors and meds, but i think you have to have it for a year before they cover existing problems. i hate spending money right now, but i think if i can get my BS straight, it will be worth it. pat > > Pat, my insurance covers the nutritionist, maybe yours will too? Guest guest
Pat, my insurance covers the nutritionist, maybe yours will too? After all, it's better to prevent a problem then to have to pay for it, you'd think the insurance companies would figure that out!!! Duhhhhhhh! Your twin in Manassas!
