HI everyone

I just sent this elsewhere (sorry if you've seen it) but thought it'd be good info to send here as well especially for those who use the antihistamines to quell inflammation and that histamine which causes inflammation, pain and itch. It's about Doxepin and I have sent 'some' of this on before but here's some new information.

Someone had mentioned the use of Zonalon cream (prescription) for itch or pain and inflammation (via halting histamine) and it helps... and it has Doxepin in it, which according to some articles I've seen too (on doxepin) works quite well. It is an antipruritic used to reduce itching and inflammation associated with certain skin conditions. I know it states that if no improvement within 8 days to stop using it. But here's some other news !!!! ;)

You know me and how I love that wild goose chase, *smile* so listen to this about Doxepin from a study... and I'm NOT sure if it's the same as the Zonalone (might be) and it does have that ingredient in it.

Doxepin, a tricyclic compound, it's usually used orally for depression but NOT in this case and has been found to have 'potent' histamine receptor blocking properties.

(there's that doggone histamine again and why the anti-histamines can help us)

Doxepin, is now currently available in a five-percent topical cream, and has been found to be approximately 50 times more potent than hydroxyzine (Atarax) and nearly 800 times more potent than diphenhydramine as an antihistamine. (to prevent itch and inflammation)

Doxepin cream has been found to control the pruritus (itchiness) inflammation and pain of atopic dermatitis, eczema, and urticaria - all histamine induced - with results superior to the use of any steroid cream or oral antihistamines.

Topical doxepin provided as a five-percent cream has been shown to be extremely effective in controlling the itch and pain (and inflammation) caused by a number of types of dermatitis. There have been minimal side effects noted, the most prominent being a transient somnolence, (sleepiness) which decreases with continued doxepin usage.

These are some references to it, and the name of the cream is called PRUDOXIN runs about $48.00 and is available via prescription. ;) I've a feeling though that Zonalon is probably very similiar, but both have the doxepin in it.

Oooooh I just get so excited when I hear of something new that might help us all. *grin* I'd sure be trying that PRUDOXIN or Zonalon in a heart beat. *smile*

Here's some references as well on it.

1.Breneman DL, Dunlap FE, Monroe EW, Schupbach CW, Shmunes E, SB. Doxepin cream relieves eczema-associated pruritus within 15 minutes and is 'not' accompanied by a risk of rebound upon discontinuation.(as a steroid may) J Dermatol Treat. 1997, 8:161-168.

*note 'atopic' means genetically connected or a pre-disposition (autoimmune) which again ties into the theory of over 50% having a genetic disposition ( a gene) with vulvar pain) dee t.

3. Berberian BJ, Breneman DL, Drake LA, Gratton D, Raimir SS, S, Sulica VI, Bernstein JE. The addition of topical doxepin to corticosteroid therapy: an improved treatment regimen for atopic dermatitis. Intl J Dermatol. 1999: 38: 145-148.

Hugs to all. hope you found it interesting and that it might help.

Dee~
