hope that was directed toward me, cheeky. lol i need that today.

one of my buddies is my age and just lost her hubby after a long, painful

disease. she and i are both doing the " depression " thing. we're both 50+

(i have more pluses than she does, lol). but she gave me some thoughts on

getting my life in order, and the both or us are working on kinda starting

over, and getting motivated and all. i watched Oprah today (i don't do that

much any more) and say lotsa older women (like mid-50s where i am). and

then a slight lecture from the doctor today.

i'm telling myself now that i can do anything that any other woman can do.

i don't have a degree; and i'm not brilliant; and i'm not rich. but i am

very determined, i'm a control freak, and i refuse to allow someone to put me

down.

i'm not sure where i'm going in life, but i'm telling myself (and i'm buying

another journal tomorrow to use as my " motivation " journal) that i can do

whatever i put my mind to; that i will beat this stupid disease; and no one

had better get in my way. lol

now if the stores will just stop selling Ben & Jerrys. lol pat

exactly. i'm determined too, but i still want to go and get a chili dog and

fries; or get Captain D's (got it today and my BP went to 221!!); or just

grab a candy bar. it's not that i really want them but i'd like to be able

to do it if i wanted. and i don't want to have to calculate the calories

and grams. and it's not that i'm a corporate executive; or that eligible

young hunks are beating down my door; or that my basket orders are coming in

fast and furious.

the book i'm reading now pretty much says that it's normal to grieve; be mad,

upset, depressed. and that everyone does it. and that most get over it

within the first year. i've always collected recipes, and i'm trying to

decide if i can do a cookbook from those recipes, and change them to

diabetic. and i watched Beverly on Oprah say today that you need to

have something to excite you every day and just rejoice. i'm not there yet,

but i want to be.

and from what lots on this list have said, when your BS gets stabilized, and

your weight comes down, your attitude and depression are better. so, i will

clean out my dining room this week, and get ready for my new treadmill.

yep, i understand. i've never really cared for ice cream, but when mom was

in the nursing home, and i just needed something when i left there late at

nite, i grabbed a pint of Ben & jerry. i became the B & J expert. no clue

how and why i started with that. usually, a hamburger or something would

have worked better for me.

i would say that your hubby and kids are thoughtless, but it's just that they

don't have to give up stuff, and don't realize that having it there is

horrible for you. but you know, i get more upset when i really want a bite

of something, and it's not there. i'm hoping in a few months, it won't

matter and i could have donuts in every room, and they would just get hard

little uneaten rocks.

i think having to think about food all day makes it worse. when i could

just go in the frige and get 'whatever', it was easier. now, i have to

plan, and at least for me, planning anything is against my nature. pat

well, vicki is an old timer, and it sounds like it's second nature to her.

i'm guessing that the same will happen for me. i guess i knew that captain

d's ws not on the good list, but i just wanted to try. well, goodbye

captain ds.

but yep, it's a pain. brother is comin up this weekend, which means the brew

pub. so, i'm guessing that if i go easy at breakfast (and skip the salsa on

the eggs), and maybe forget the bacon or sausage and substitute something

else; and have a salad for lunch, that i could have a burger and a beer.

but since the place has fresh fish, that's actually easier to tackle because

you don't have to figure out where to put the bread. lol pat

You can do anything you want to do, and it sounds like you have the

determination. I spent last week grieving (for my sugar) and throwing my

temper tantrum (because I have to learn about this illness and how to eat),

but now I'm ready to face it head on. Once I set my mind to achieve a goal,

I usually attain it. Getting to that decision is the hard part.

I wish I could clean out all the carbs in my house, but my husband and 4

teenagers would fight that tooth and nail and I just don't have it in me to

the be food police for everyone. I can substitute some of the foods, and I

don't normally buy snacks (too expensive), but we do have many other high

carb things around.

What I find so overwhelming is just the fact that I have to learn about this

illness and a new way of eating. My youngest son has bipolar disorder (I

grieved for a whole year over that diagnosis) and I've spent the last 4

years working to keep him stable, learning about his illness and symptoms,

and teaching him about his illness, medication, and how to recognize signs

that he is becoming unstable. I'm just plain worn out. And how do you

think I self medicated when I was falling into that deep pit of despair?

With carbs, of course!

That's exactly what it is! The planning is a pain! I have to start

planning what I'm going to have for lunch at 9:00 in the morning!!! Geez!

Like I have that much time! But I figure that once I get used to eating the

low-carb foods, it will become second nature to me and I will be able to

reach into the refrigerater and just grab something.

Oh, , I'm so sorry to hear that...but you really must take care of

yourself. If you don't get those BGs down, you won't be there for your family

when they need you. Or you will but not able to care for them because of

your own health problems that can happen with continued longterm high BGs

such as painful peripheral neuropathy, blindness, amputation, heart disease,

renal disease...you get the idea.

Now...don't panic, you can avoid all the above with good BG control...and

none of it happens until you've had out of control BGs for months and

months...sometimes years and years. But still, you've got to work at it

every day. And...after a while, it becomes easier...for me, after five years

post diagnosis, it's second nature. Vicki

How to coexist with stores that sell Ben & Jerry's....

First - Park FAR away from the store......your body won't realize it had a

bit more exercise when you have to walk across the parking lot.

Second - Stay at the store perimeters.......and turn your head as you walk by

the bakery. Avoid the snack and prepared food aisles. If you must enter the

dreaded freezer aisle for frozen veggies or something, take a deep breath and

move in and out quickly.

Third - Put away groceries in your now empty fridge and freezer (empty

because you ALREADY threw away/gave away any food that does not HELP you.

Your sparkling fridge now welcomes you with veggies, fruits, etc.

STAY BUSY!!! Try something new you haven't done before to occupy your mind

and time.

No, no, Pat, you don't have to skip the bacon or sausage -- unless the

sausage has fillers - read labels. Meats, chicken, fish -- all those things

-- are minimally to NO carbs at all. Protein, yes; carbs no. Read the USDA

I bake bread, make potato or rice dishes, stock the fridge with ice cream,

etc. for and . It just does not tempt me.

Yesterday , Zeke the dog and I drove to Lake Champlain and camped out

at Button Bay State Park. We went to bed soon after it got dark and were up

with the dawn.

I drove to a little country store this morning and scoured the aisles for

something suitable to eat and drink. Not much!! I got beef jerky and cashews

and settled on campground water. I still detest diet soda and all the juices

have too many carbs. It made me appreciate home and the well stocked fridge,

pantry and freezers ;-) For me, the secret to eating right is being

surrounded by all the right stuff ;-)

i'm also working on calories. the doctor said to cut out some meats. i

think probably what i will do is have meat and vegies for lunch, and a salad

for dinner. today, for some reason, i was tired, and just got up. i know

what i need to do is get to bed early, and wake up much earlier, and get

meals at same time.

actually, the only big store in town that carried B & J is Food Lion, and i

don't shop there. my 7-11 behind my house does carry it, and i go there all

the time to grab some flowers, or a newspaper. i think i will just have to

get flowers at the florist a few doors down, and then get my newspaper at the

pharmacy (which carried b & J, but has 'nasty' flavors).

i'm also guessing that when i really get my BP regulated, and get some of

this weight off, that will be my motivation. i really haven't gone for the

candy i bought in a week or so. pat

well, i usually get the brew on tap, but i realize that i can ask for a light

beer, and that would solve some problems. i realize i just need to test

afterwards (think i forgot to last time) and see what happens. pat

I wonder why he said that...meat doesn't have many calories...assuming you

eat a reasonable sized portion (4-6 oz.)...the " lowfat " thingie is currently

in question too.

maybe he means portions. that's why i say i think i might go to a

nutritionist. he's the oncologist, and is working me in, and trying to

help. but i think diabetes is not his specialty (although tweaking meds

is). he gave me a little handwritten chart, and said that i need to have

this% fat, this% carbs, etc., and said i needed to cut calories. maybe that

was the thing. i've gained weight, and he put me on 1400 a day, and said to

drop a " meal " , and have a salad.

i really slept late today, so breakfast was at noon. dinner will be in a

few hours and i'll have a nice salad, with eggs, shrimp, and vegies. then

before bed, i may get a handful of nuts, and maybea few spoons of cantaloupe

chunks. tomorrow, i need to get to the store and get some strawberries.

got home too late yesterday. thought it was about to rain and had windows

open. pat

Yes, but Pat likes hot dogs. They aren't very good for ya'. The same is true

with SOME sausages, pepperoni and other processed meats like bologna,

luncheon meat, Spam, etc. Fish, seafood and chicken are good to eat.....the

kind not fried, but baked, broiled, poached......

actually, they are easy; i can freeze some. but i am getting tired of them.

i think it was the amount i eat. i told him a chuck of meat (and i

measured it out in my hand) and the amount of vegies. i told him i did

that 3 times a day, and had snacks. he suggested i cut out some meat and

have lesser meals. i'm gaining weight. pat

Want me to be honest? Or will you beat me? ;-)

I think your meal choices are all over the place. My favorite dessert with

cream is only OK on a low carb diet. If you eat higher carbs, plus that, it

will put on weight.

First, you need to decide what sort of plan you would like to follow.

Then...whatever that plan is, be faithful to it. When a low-carber goes off

the wagon and eats a creamee or a croissant, it messes everything up,

creating weight gain and gut discomfort. Ask me how I know ;-)

There are many choices out there....carb counting, plate percentages,

exchanges, low carb, etc. If you hop back and forth, it will not be as

effective.

In 6 weeks, I have only had about 6 snacks. I don't take meds, so I don't

need them. I am not a snacky person. I can see how the snacks can easily get

out of hand. Even though a candy is low carb, it is not non-fattening ;-)

When I eat nuts, I get out the bag, count out 10 and put the bag away. If you

just keep munching, the count becomes a mystery....and is easily way too

many.

Sometimes after I eat, I want more. I wait, test 2 hours after eating and

usually I'm not hungry any more ;-) I find that drinking my lemon in water

fills me up, too.

actually, that's why i'm frustrated. i have no clue what i'm doing. i'm

not sure what a low-carb diet plan is. i thought i was doing it, but i

really don't have a clue how to begin, or what to do. i started yesterday

counting carbs, and i had no clue that the salsa had 15g. i really don't

know how to measure (cups, weight), which is why i said i might go to someone

who will actually sit down with me, get me started, and then i will know what

i'm doing.

i just decided that eating a lean meat, vegies, and maybe some fruit was ok.

how much? well, just a piece of meat, and " some " vegies. i guess that's

why he told me to zap some of the meat. but i remember a buddy going on

Atkins 20 years ago. and when she cheated and had something not on the

list, balloon time. pat

cindy u are not the only when i have a 12, 10 and 5 year old at home and

they eat whatever they want, especially now with schools off. i even cook it

but i stay away from that stuff just say its poison for u like an allergy if

u had physical symtoms u wouldn't eat it would u well treat a hi bs reading

like a raving migraine!!! cheeky

Some info Re: Beer. Light beers generally have about 5 g. carbs per 12 oz.

serving, but this can vary. The lowest I know of is Lite w/ 3.2

g./serving. Some range as high as 7 or 8 g. Regular beers are likely to

have closer to 15 g. per 12 oz. serving. " Heavier " more flavorful beers

will generally be even higher because they have more sugars. On the other

hand, alcohol tends to slow the liver's production of glucose, so some

people find they don't get quite as high of a blood sugar increase as would

otherwise be expected from the carbs in beer or wine. On the third hand (if

you have a third hand), I find that Mexican beer, for example, kicks my

blood sugar up a lot, so I stick to light beers. So test, test, test to

find out what is reasonable for you.
