See below e-mail exchange I recently had with Dr Blecher. I am

shocked at the lack of professionalism of his answer.

hello mrs hess. it is not appropriate to start at that age, with this

condition. they are salespersons (as he is an orthotist) but they are

very commercial... heavily advertised on the internet....

kind regards,

chris blecher

Hess Plagiocephaly 14 months

Dr Blecher,

I contacted you in May re my son's plagiocephaly ( Hess, dob

13/07/04). Back then you asked me to send you some photos, which I

did. You never came back to me. Did you think it was not serious

enough to be treated or was too old or were you just too

busy.

I still worry about 's head.

Tomorrow I have an appoitment with Steve Mottram (Medistox) who fits

STARbands. Have you heard of him? I would be grateful if you could

let me know what you think and what you recommend I should do?

Best regards

Hess

That is horrible. I really can't even tell what he's talking about. Is he

saying is too old or too young for the treatment? And what does

the web have to do with anything anyway? Clearly the people who sell bands

are going to err on the side of selling you a band, but you can look at your

child and see if he needs the band or not. Is this e-mail from your

pediatrician? I would be so upset by this if it were me. Good luck moving

forward with 's treatment.

Beth,

They are two doctors treating plagiocephaly in London: Dr Blecher

(passive helmets) and Steve Mottram (orthotist, STARband. The e-mail

exchange was with Dr Blecher!

(and everyone else) - this is the answer I had from him It really upset me too. He's got it all wrong, saying there is an asymmetry (there is hardly any - he's almost straight at the back) and that it isn't severe (it is severe - 96%):

hello, the defomrity is not really severe.....but a little flat. 9 months is quite late to start for a "whole back".....

i don´t have appointments before late october in the uk....

let me know it you want to travel or what you think.

kind regards,

chris blecher

I then replied:

Thanks for the response.I also contacted another specialist about an active helmet, as I found out that treatment can be started later with this product. I had an initial scan and Toby's cephalic ratio is 95.6%, so obviously it's more severe than can be seen in the photos. Thanks very much for getting back to me, but we will probably go ahead with treatment with the STARband.

He then said:

hello, this helmet is exactly the sytem we use. there is no difference. the cepahlic ratio is not of interest in your baby´s head as there is an asymmetry to deal with.i wouldn´t recommend therapy. but it is up to you. - i would not forget that these people are business people and they live from it, so they will sell you everything you would like to have.but thank you for the follow up.-regards,chris blecher

(Toby, 9.5 months, severe brachy, starting with a STARband soon)

doesn't he use passive helmets? I am really confused. Is he saying

that a passive helmet is the same as a STARband? or have I

misunderstood his answer?

It seems that he's claiming that a DOCband and a STARband are exactly the same, which according to everything I've read on the web, and everything people say on here, is completely untrue.

I was really upset last night with his emails - and similar to you, was thinking maybe he's right and I'm having Toby treated for nothing. But - regardless of his motives or intentions in writing the emails - I disagree with him and am glad Toby is being treated.

I didn't once feel pressured by Steve Mottram into having the treatment, in fact the opposite. Maybe he does have quotas to meet, as Hannah suggested some orthotists do, but I don't think Toby's treatment is unnecessary and I for one am glad I found him.

Hi ,

Just know that you are on the right track for Toby! I think that

Steve and the Starband will help Toby. Some of our moderators have

spoken with Steve and from what I have observed he is honestly

concerned with getting babies in the UK proper plagio treatment

not " cashing in " . Dr Blecher is an excellent resource in Europe as

well. Sometimes different professionals conflict. Try to shrug it

off and just go forward with Toby's treatment. YOU are the only one

that can decide if he is severe enought to warrent treatment. Sorry

if my email rambles, 2 kids climbing in my lap! :)
