Guest guest
Hi , Just wanted to share with you my Mum's story. My mum had a history of stomach ulcers & thought she had to live with pain. She hadn't been to the doctors for 16 years. She was in agony at my wedding with her tummy, and the bad days with her tummy were becoming more than the good days. It was ruining her life. ~ I NEVER suspected thyroid disease. But, I wrote her a letter from me & my brother saying how worried we were, my Dad couldn't get through to her. She was touched at our concern. I bought her peppermint capsules... which she didn't take. I then made her a double appointment at her doctor's & forced her to go & sat in. This was tough but my Dad backed me up. The GP ran a series of bloods & her TSH was 18. Voila. She's been on Levothyroxine for nearly a year now, we're in the process of trying to get her switched over to Armour but her GP has never heard of it & is unsure. (We keep giving the GP information & my progress on Armour has convinced my Mum it's for her too. Her memory has gotten very bad on Levothyroxine, she's convinced it's a side-effect of the pills & not the illness & I agree.) So, I think my point is, when you are Hypo, you really are not in a position to help yourself. You feel tired, disinterested, & one step removed from everyone else. My mum's digestive problems cleared up in a matter of days. I feared she had stomach cancer, that's how bad it was. I wish you luck with your Mum, I know how stubborn Mums can be, but sometimes you need to take a firm hand with them, the same they did with you, and say look - do this for me, if you were my daughter you'd do the same. My Mum is so much better now, and we're just trying to get my Aunty treated as well but unfortunately her TSH is only 6 and her GP thinks this is okay. We're pushing ahead with a private doc, Dr Skinner, & it's an uphill battle, but she sees him in June. So hard to convince someone something is wrong as you just learn to live with things & adapt don't you? I know I did on Levothyroxine, I'd never have had the motivation to go on Armour if I wasn't trying for a baby. I spent 5 years in a fog. Do post with how you get on with your Mum won't you?
