Head Size/Forehead Shape Concern

We've been out of helmet for 2 months now. Our son, Ian, was

diagnosed with moderate-severe plagiocephaly and mild torticollis at

4 months. At 5 months of age, he was fitted with a helmet (Danmar)

and wore for a total of 5 months. The tort was resolved via

physical therapy.

Now at one year, Ian went for his routine pediatrician exam and

there is a concern with his head size. It has always been big, but

now that he is at one year, there is a concern that the size is not

trending down to catch up with his body. (Ian has always been smack-

on average for height/weight and is at the 95th percentile in head

size.) We are going for an ultrasound next week to rule out any

fluid concerns. If the ultrasound does not read, then we will need

to look at having a catscan.

When I look at Ian's head - and of course compare with other one-

year-olds - he has a long, narrow head shape with a protruding

forehead. (Although helmet did correct alot of the assymetries, the

bossed forehead has always been there.) I'm wondering if the

forehead causes the measurement to jump!

My question is if a large head size is a common theme with plagio

babies?

At one year of age, has anyone seen success with correcting bossed

forehead via the banding? I hate to go down this road again

(especially as we thought we were done), but I don't want to rule

out what is best for our son. Any feedback/similar experiences is

appreciated.

Hello ,

I am a relative newbie to the website but read posts when I have

time. My son is now in his 2nd DOC band. He outgrew his first one in

5 weeks. Anyway at our 6 month appointment(one week ago) my

pediatrician felt my son's head circumference was to large (also 95%)

and his ht/wt were 50th. She was concerned. Anyway, he has some

forehead bossing too, which I thought could affect the measurement

negatively. Anyway, we just did the head ultrasound and everything

was fine. What a relief. So I wouldn't worry to much. Let me know

how it goes.

, do you have pictures posted? I would like to see. My son's

over all body is big along with head circ. but he has some major

bossing which he was born with. I never thought about that affecting

the circumfrence. Interestingly when we had our x-ray to get our

helmet prescription, a large bit of that bulge was actually fat.

That leads me to think that it will flatten as he gets older. I

would sure like to see photos though to see if we are going through

the same thing. Best to you!

Hi ...awww he's so handsome! I don't think his " bossing " looks

unusual at all. Yes, a larger head is a common theme in plagio

babies. That, and answers to other questions can be found in

our " Polls " section (click at left.)
