Hi - Our son Tommy is now in second grade - he will be 9 in July. We held

Tommy back so he repeated first grade last year. Every child is different of

course, but for Tom, it's probably the best thing we could have done for him.

He also was one of the youngest in his class, and coupled with being diagnosed

late with his hearing loss - well, it was a decision that made sense for us.....

I will say Tommy is not tall and looks like he should be a second grader ( I

*am* his mother - he got my short genes I guess). I don't think being tall for

his age really is the reason to hold back or not - we looked primarily at social

skills - Tommy just seemed like the youngest in his class - and also

academically. Tom also has ADHD which we feel like we understand and for which

he's receiving treatment now - all of which we worked out in his second year of

first grade.

Tommy until this year was the only kid at his school with hearing aids (his

little brother is now in kindergarten - Sammy is deaf and wear bilateral aids).

I honestly have to say the other kids don't seem to pay attention to that -

Tommy seems to be well liked by his friends and fits in with the kids in his

class. We also watch the time that he spends out of class because that doesn't

help him socially.

I hope this helps - if you have questions, let me know. It was definitely the

right thing to have done for Tommy - of course, every child is different......

Take care

Barbara

We have been fighting with our son's school for a long time now from

placement to having to go to court for a FM system. is now in

the second grade and is pulled out for reading and math along with

speech. At his IEP meeting they told us that when he enters the third

grade next year he will be working on second grade work because of

all the delays is his education like having no FM for a year. My

question is will only be 8 in Aug. He is young for third grade

should we leave him back? I have asked this question to the scool and

they said no because is is very tall for his age! is unhappy at

school because he does'nt have many friends which I think it is

because he is never with his class and he is the only child with

hearing aids. I would love some help!!
