Were you breathing through your mouth? Or maybe didn't shake the

thermometer down, if it was mercury?

Yes, I will try it again. I did not have anything cold to drink in between. I

did oral for 3 min. and under arm for 10 min.

Re: Temp differences

Hmmm. Lots of possibilities here. How long did you leave it in your

mouth? Maybe you have discovered for all of us that it has to be

left in long enough.....

Or, had you had something cold to drink right before doing the

oral.....I doubt it but wanted to ask.

Can you try it again, but this time, do the oral longer and let us

know?

I took it orally and it was 96.4. What gives? Is under the arm

more accurate than orally?

There is a lot of controversy here about types of thermometers... Most

fever digital thermometers are not accurate enough to be able to check

basal temps, they're not designed for it... they are designed to check

for abnormally high temps - fevers.

Mercury thermometers used under the tongue are the most accurate.

Temps taken under the arm are generally lower than temps taken under the

tongue or analy.

I'm hearing that folks that are using basal thermometers, like those used

to check ovulation, are getting accurate results.

What you are trying to track is what your current temp is.. and if it's

rising as you start taking meds or increasing dosages. You need an

accurate thermometer to be able to track increases by the tenth of a

degree... if it's not accurate enough to do that, it's not what you need

to be checking basals... IMHO

The basal temp is the temp of your body when you first wake, before you

so much as sit up in bed. It's the body temp that your metabolism is able

to maintain on it's own, without the addition of heat produced by muscles

from normal movement. That is why we take it when waking, before moving

around.

If your metabolism is low your body will have a hard time maintaining

temp, your body temp will drop during the night... If your metabolism is

working as it should, you will be able to maintain your body temp during

the night....

Insufficient body temp messes up digestion, healing, growth.. along with

all the other things associated with low metabolism and other hypothyroid

symptoms.

I was able to track mine from it's starting point of about 97 up to where

it's at now.. hovering between 98.4 to 98.6.... when it's over 99 I know,

now, that I'm fighting an infection of some type and act accordingly...

.... so.. that's my experience.. and opinion....
