" Often, the greeting is accompanied by the giving of lai see, red paper envelopes gold-stamped with good-luck mottoes and containing a gift of crisp, new paper money or two matched shiny coins. Flowers also play a leading role in the Lunar New Year tradition. Peach blossoms, narcissi, peonies and pussy willow are sold at the annual New Year flower market in Hong Kong's Park. All symbolize good luck and prosperity, as does the miniature orange, or kumquat plant with its gold-coloured fruit. Kum sounds the same as the Chinese for gold. Visitors to Asia are also likely to come across a lion dance, the colourful, noisy and athletic display aimed at frightening away evil spirits and bringing good luck. Most hotels have a lion troupe performing in the lobby while, in the traditional villages, the troupe moves from house to house in rhythmic ceremony. In Hong Kong, firecrackers have long been associated with the Lunar New Year celebrations and the tradition is carried on with a magnificent official pyrotechnic extravaganza over Harbour on the second day of the Lunar New Year. Popular vantage points for these fabulous free performances are the East Tsim Sha Tsui waterfront, The Peak or any building which affords a harbour view. Unlike the western New Year, the Lunar New Year does not fall at a set time every year. As its name implies, it is dictated by the moon, and it begins on the first day of the first moon after the sun enters Aquarius. The first three days of Lunar New Year, the most important Chinese festival of the year, are public holidays in Hong Kong where tradition dictates the activities to be undertaken throughout the holiday. On the first day of the holiday, while many families may go and watch the Chinese New Year Parade along Wan Chai & Central District waterfront, the family traditionally stays home together. The second day is a time to visit friends and more distant relatives. Great significance is attached to the first visitor to the house or the first person seen after leaving the house. They could be the bearer of good luck or bad luck. The third day is Chak Hau, or Quarrel Day, the day on which you are most likely to get into arguments, so it is thought prudent to stay home. Various celebrations, traditions and observances take place until the 15th day of the New Year also known as Yuen Siu, or Spring Lantern Festival. With Yuen Siu, a Taoist tradition, the New Year celebrations end and Hong Kong embarks on another busy round of traditional celebrations, sports, arts, festivals, business and excitement! YEAR OF THE GOAT OR SHEEP Goat or Sheep: 1907, 1919, 1931, 1943, 1955, 1967, 1979, 1991 More about the Year of the Goat or Sheep Year 2003 is the year of Black Sheep, which contains Water, Fire, Earth and some Wood. Again, Water and Fire are incompatible as in 2002; Water and Earth are unfriendly. Fortunately, there is a little Wood inside the Sheep. When Water is fighting with Fire or Earth, Wood has a chance as the mediator between them. Also, 2002 Black Horse is a pair of male Fire and male Water; 2003 Black Sheep has a pair of female Fire and female Water. The conflict between males always comes stronger than the one between females. Therefore, the impact of the conflict between Fire and Water in 2003 is much lesser than in 2002. This means 2003 will be more peaceful than 2002 and year 2003 continues the Five Element cycle flow from 2002. Any unfinished business in 2002 will carry over to the next year until the fall of 2003. The Year 2003 (Black Sheep) is the 4700th Chinese year. The Chinese believe that the first king of China was the Yellow King (he was not the first emperor of China who completed the Great Wall). The Yellow King became king in 2697 B.C., therefore China will enter the 4700th year on February 4th, 2003. Also, the Chinese Year uses the cycle of 60 Stem-Branch counting systems and the Black Sheep is the 20th Stem-Branch in the cycle. Since 4700 (60 *78) + 20, therefore this Black Sheep Year is the 4700th Chinese Year. Some say the year 2003 is the 4701st Chinese year. If you cannot find the explanation, here is a possible answer for you. The Yellow King's inauguration was held in the spring of 2697 B.C.. But the calendar of Yellow King used the winter solstice day as the first day of the year. So the first winter solstice was on around December 23rd, 2698 B.C. Today's January 1st means nothing to Yellow King. If we count that extra eight days in 2698 B.C. for a year, then ye 2003 is the Year of Goat, which is also known as the Sheep or Ram. According to the Chinese zodiac people born under the sign of 'The Gentle Sheep' are creative, charming, sensitive dreamers but are also insecure and disorganized. Chinese people around the world traditionally mark the passage of time with a 12-year cycle known as the Chinese zodiac. It comprises 12 animal signs: rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, goat, monkey, rooster, dog and pig. Mandarin speakers love to use idioms that are four syllables long. These four-character idioms are bandied about liberally during Chinese New Year, usually in relation to the year's zodiac animal. A frequent saying during goat years is san yang kai tai. The sound yang can be written in several different ways. One is the ideogram for ram, sheep or goat, while the other is a character that refers to a term in the ancient " Book of Changes, " or " I Ching. " The idiom means " THE BEGINNINGS OF GOOD FORTUNE. " Prefaced by san, meaning " three, " the first two words in this four-character expression conjure up an image of three goats. Since ancient times, the three-goat motif has been employed by artists, who sometimes cleverly included three goats or sheep in their paintings as an oblique reference to the Year of the Goat and a sign to secretly and powerfully wish people good fortune. During the Ching dynasty (1644-1911), for example, a court painter to the Chienlung emperor painted " San Yang Kai Tai " using the symbol of the three sheep. It is a unique piece in that the artist, an Italian Jesuit missionary named Giuseppe Castiglione, imbued it with a mix of Western and Eastern influences. The emperor himself, who was known not only as a patron of the arts but an artist in his own right, used the same triple-sheep imagery in his " Kai Tai Tu. " Today, both are part of the permanent collection in suburban Taipei's National Palace Museum. Another Chinese classic " Shou Wen Chieh Tzu " explains that goats represent luck because yang rhymes with hsiang, which is the word for auspiciousness. As early as the Chou dynasty (1122-221 B.C.), goats were regarded as one of the three great sacrifices to the Chinese land god, the other two being cows and pigs. The tame animal began to be associated with the virtue of filial gratitude, most likely because of the kneeling posture kids adopt while suckling. People born in a goat year -- the last one on the 12-year cycle was 1991 -- are therefore said to be gentle and kind. Their introverted nature makes them concentrate on their own work even as others fail to notice them. Never ones to force others to accept their views, goats are elegant and tranquil with artistic characteristics. Goats are said to be compatible mates with someone born in a year of the rabbit, horse or pig, but they would be well advised to avoid entanglements with people born during an ox year. There are, however, several Chinese idioms that caution against being too much like a goat or sheep. Every one has an hour of birth that balances the nature. The phrase " sheep in a tiger's mouth, " for example, warns kind, good-natured people not to be too trusting or generous lest they fall into the hands of unscrupulous villains. The classic " sheep in a tiger's skin " refers to someone who appears impressive but is, deep down, is without substance or self estemm. On the other hand, the Chinese expression " mending the fence after the sheep has escaped " teaches that, even after a failure, it is never too late to fix things. Every Sheep, Ram and Goat should commit this to memory. There is another saying about losing track of a missing sheep that comes from a fable dating back to the Warring States Period (475-221 B.C.). It tells the story of a respected academic named Yangtsu. One day, Yangtsu's neighbor lost a sheep and he asked the townspeople to help him find it. After searching long and hard, the townsfolk failed to track down the wayward animal. Yangtsu inquired about their failure, and they replied that there was a fork in the road. Each fork led to another fork and, not knowing which way the sheep had gone, the search party returned home. Hearing this, the scholar was very disappointed. He sulked all day until his students ventured to ask him what was the matter. They pointed out that sheep are not worth much, and this it was not even Yangtsu's sheep that got lost. Why, they wanted to know, was he so sullen? Yangtsu answered them, " my luck has been lost " . The story is meant to impart to the listener the importance of having a plan, especially with regard to one's education. Studying, like finding sheep on forked roads, requires direction, intention, clarity, or else it is a waste of energy. People with diverse or uncertain goals are quickly led astray when they come in contact with acquiring sheep. Most Americans and Europeans hate to look at themselves! The sheep is known for looking so deeply into the personality of another that it inspires murder, as in the case of Lennon and the parts that DeNiro has always played. Counting sheep is an Ameircan pastime to relax before sleeping that has it's roots in the same. How many Sheep, Ram, Goats or VALUABLE GOOD LUCK PEOPLE are in your life? BUDDHA told a story of a PRIEST at a temple, ready to sacrifice a living GOAT. The GOAT began to laugh hysterically and the priest quite dismayed asked him, " why was he laughing in the face of death? " The GOAT answered, " 9999 times I have been born a goat and now I am to be to become a human being again. But then the GOAT began to cry and wail and the PRIEST inquired, " now whay do you lament so? The GOAT spoke again to the PRIEST and said, before I incarnated into these lifetimes as a GOAT, I too was a PRIEST who sacrificed GOATS. " The Moral of the story is : no living creature should ever be the cause of suffering of another. Also heed and pay attention when a Sheep, Ram or Goat laughs or crys.. Peace and blessings!
