I have been taking Nexium and/or Prilosec with my thyroid hormone for years.

I've checked with several doctors and it is fine to take them together. It

has never affected my TSH levels--meaning I've never noticed a change in the

levels since before I took the other drugs as compared to now. How are you

so sure that you don't have reflux disease. That is just about the only

thing that causes your symptoms. I developed reflux about 3 years after

being diagnosed with thyroid cancer. I do not think thyroid cancer caused

it; however, my reflux did develop right after being hypothyroid for the

scanning process. It has never gone away. I had an endoscopy done to

confirm that the lower esophageal sphincter is loose. Maybe being hypo

caused it. Who knows.

Just to let you know, I have reflux but do NOT nor ever had heartburn. My

main problem is queasiness and just feeling like food doesn't sit well in my

stomach. No heartburn.

Thanks . I guess I am not sure I don't have reflux, but the pain

and nausea is just in my stomach. I don't have heartburn so I figure it is

not in my esophagus. I got back to the doctor on July 8th and maybe to do

an Upper GI to see what's up. This is just so sudden. I haven't had

heartburn or acid stomach for years since I changed the way I ate. Then it

happened when I was hypo but I took Pepcid AC and it helped. Then it went

away as I was back on the thyroid hormone. Then all of a sudden it was back

with a burning hole in my stomach so I went to the doctor and got the Nexium

samples.

Thanks again for the information. It was becoming a pain in the butt to

take the two pills apart. :-)

& - this is so interesting to

hear this info about acid reflux - I was diagnosed

with the same in January - I felt like I had a

pill stuck in my throat - went thru a barium

swallow and a CAT scan - the scan showed

I had a lump on my thyroid. I have been on

Synthroid since May of 2001, but not really

any stomach burning, etc - just the pill

sensation - anyway, as soon as I took Pepcid

it went away - then they started dealing with

the thyroid lump -

Did not have any acid problem again, except just before thyroid surgery and

now I am having

a hard time swallowing - I am wondering if the

acid reflux is back..

Seems quite a coincidence that others of us are

having some of this same type symptom.

I felt lump-in-the-throat for quite some time after my TT (10/00). It

went away gradually. It wasn't so much trouble swallowing, although

that was part of it at times (especially for Horse Pills), as it was

feeling like I was being strangled from the inside. But it did go

away. I realized one day that I hadn't felt it lately.

Are you sure it's not an ulcer? and if it is, what kind (some are

actually caused by bacteria!).

As for the 2-things-on-an-empty-stomach-but-not-together -- do you by

any chance need to get up in the middle of the night to pee? I do, and

that's when I take my thyroid med. I eat before bedtime, so I can't

take

it then, as some do.

I use those 7-day pill sorters, so I can always tell which of my pills

I've taken on any given day. Vitamin has calcium in it, so has to be

some hours after thyroid, etc. and I need an easy way to tell what

I've done. I have other visual clues if I'm taking something

temporarily.

Thanks bj, I am not sure of that either. I go back to the doctor on 7/8 and

they may decide to do an Upper GI to determine what is causing this sudden

problem. I do get up in the middle of the night. But I am afraid that I

skip my Thyroid hormone accidentally if I do that. But said she

takes hers together so I will try that. I am hoping this is temporary. I

do not want to be on another prescription for the rest of my life.

I am taking my protonix and my levoxyl at the same time. I did try the

levoxyl twice before my official wake-up time and found it upset my

stomach. When I qestioned the endo about taking the two together, she said

it would be fine. We are working on finding the correct dosage of levoxyl

now and when we arrive at it, taking the protonix at the same time will be

factored in.

For what it is worth - i too have acid reflux since my TT and RAI,

never had it before either. Have seen my PCP, 2 throat specialists,

an oncologist, and am in the process of securing a new endo. They are

all saying, except Endo, it could be an effect from the RAI and also

a side effect of the Synthroid i am now on.

Who knows but i personally am hoping once i get my follow-up scan

behind me (if clean of course) this will clear up. Sometimes the

heartburn becomes unbearable even with the nexium i am on, other

times it is almost non-exsistent plus every level between. Eating

small meals more often seems to reduce the effect, also avoiding

chocolate, caffeine and acids has been recommended. I do that

whenever possible.

BJ,

Just to let you know, you are not alone, I also take the tyroid replacement

in the middle of the night. I have done that for years as that is the time

I am sure it is taken several hours before/after anything else.

I always take mine in the middle of the night.. Typically I have to

pee (i can't believe i'm sharing this on the internet) at like 3:30

or 4am every morning (years of long distance bike riding, if you

don't have to get up to pee, you aren't properly hydrated!!!!) and i

take my levoxyl then... i use a 7 day pill box so when the dog wakes

me up at 5 or 6 I can tell if i've already had my pill for the day..
