rowan is obsessed with letters as well and has been since he was 2. he doesn't

watch any tv shows but loves to come flap his hands over the " PBS " or " CBS " etc

in the corner of the screen. letters and shapes are his two biggest obsessions.

triangles by far are his favourite shapes. W is his favourite letter. it took

me a while to see why - there are 3 triangles in W. he loves to write his name

over and over which he has just pointed out has 7 triangles (if you print it in

capitals)!

he too likes to read the phone book!

Alphabet obsession

So why do so many of our kids love the alphabet so much?

I finally figured out why has been so enamored of the phonebook. It

has the alphabet written down the side of every page! It is the most

wonderful book in the world...

He also discoverd that the ENTIRE ALPHABET is right there on the keyboard.

He stands here and just stares at it and says the alphabet to himself

slowly. I think he is finding each letter on the keyboard before he says

it. I'm trying to get him to type it. He wants to use my finger to push

the keys and he will do that to type strings of letters - tuvwxyz for

example. I haven't gotten him to type the whole thing yet.

So look out for cryptic, Putter-style messages coming your way. ;)

i know, jenna was like this, and still is...

when she was about 2, she has the magnetic letters

and a board, and she would put the alphabet on the

board, in the correct order..pretty much taught

herself, the letters...it was so amazing..sames

with the numbers...

now, she will put the alphabet letters on the

refridgerator, backwards, in about a minute...

i myself, have to think about saying it backwards..

and if they are all in a big pile (the letters)

she can tell if one of them are missing~~~

this stuff amazes me..hey?

could it be? another triangle fan???

Re: Alphabet obsession

Wow ! 's favorite letter has always been W ever since very

young! He has also liked the number 4, especially when formed like it is in

this typing.

I never thought about it before, but his teacher during his non verbal stage

(from 2-3 1/2) said that she was absolutely certain that one day he said

'triangle' as clear as a bell. Not another word after that for awhile

though. Hmmmmm.

Hey Sara

ph did the obsession. He even made us search the house for

things that began with A B C so on.. he would line them up on the

carpet A-Z and watchout if we couldnt come up with something for EACH

letter. And god forbid if someone knocked into them walking or

something. lol

But Ive seen my boy as a motivated learner and what a wonderful thing

to get obessesed on when language is so difficult for many

autistics. Yep, you may have a typist soon.

OH,, and I have a computer program, in case you are interested. Its

called Writing with Symbols 2000, and it uses Mayer symbols

that pop up when a word is typed. And to top it off, it talks too!!

ph has spent many hours at the computer with this program. Its

expensive though, just over 200.00 bucks

Have fun

That is so funny. I never thought of that w/ W's, but they are Karson's

favorite as well. He makes sure he points out every and all W's he sees. Even

when I wear a Tommy shirt--He says M M M M --yes baby that's a M, then he turns

his head upside down and says W W W W--lol. So, actually Karson loves M's and

W's. He also loves the name of the channels in the bottom corners and points

those out as well. I'll be channel surfing and he is going CBS, ABC, NBC, Fox,

USA, TNN, and on and on--LOL. And heaven forbid we pull out the phone book as

well. He loves it too and will repeat phonebook phonebook over and over again

till he gets it. Makes me chuckle tho, coz didn't Rainman have all the names

and numbers in the phonebook memorized? I haven't seen that movie in ages, but

I need to rent it again soon and pay closer attention. Also, I am convinced

Forrest Gump was on the spectrum as well. Amie

actually, i have this weird letter fascination too. more like an obsession

really. i trace words in my head counting out the strokes and making equal

numerical patterns. i've done this since i was a teenager. i was actually able

to suppress it for a number of years after it got SO bad that it consumed my

every thought, but at some point, it came back, just not as bad. i absolutely

hate it. actually, let's use the word " HATE " as an example. it has 4 sets of 3

strokes. see it?

I had forgotten about Wheel of Fortune, as we haven't watched that in ages.

Before Karson was diagnonsised I could not figure out his fasination w/ that

show. He would sit and this being the only time he would sit, for the entire 30

mins of the show---esp if the commercails were car commercails. LOL too

funny--thanx for the memory. So, apparently Wheel of Fortune is an autistic's

favorite? What keeps them captivated? Is it the wheel ohhhhhhh and a light

comes on--the alphabet???????? Gheesh--and the world makes sense again. Amie

Never thought about The Price Is Right. But yes the wheel on Wheel of Fortune

does make a wonderful ticking sound--hehe. I also remember now when Karson's

was starting to speak and the words weren't clear at all--18 months, he would

sit it in front of the TV and to me it sounded like he was yelling out

letters--LOL. Our children are sooooo funny. Amie
