Hi Lynn,

If you can't take any anti-inflammatories then I would check with the

doctor who did the surgery because the Prednisone might do more harm. I

take Celebrex and I really like it. Without it I can't hardly walk and

I get very sick, almost like I have a good case of the flu.

I can understand your worry about taking Prednisone and the weight gain.

My gosh, that's wonderful about your weight loss. I can see why you

would want to go to a nutritionalist to get on the right track.

Because of your past history it would be a good idea to get help in that

area. Heck, it can't hurt and you might be able to share some good

stuff with us.

As for the wrinkles in the face area... YOU BET it will smooth out those

wrinkles... almost to a GLASS finish....LOL My face became so tight and

shiny. Of course I had SLITS for eye's and I no longer had a nose

because my cheeks got so big they almost covered my nose. And, lets not

forget the Camel hump... such a lovely addition to your body.

Has your doctor said anything about going on Imuran or Methotrexate?

These suppress the immune system and you won't need as much Prednisone.

I would first contact your surgeon and tell him what's going on. Then

tell the Rheumy.... this will give your rheumy a heads up of what not to

give you.

Hope you have a good day,

Take care,

Vicki

Hi Lynn :-)

Just wanted to share that I have been on the Prednisone at 60mgs (and

now 65mgs since Friday...to go up to 75mgs over the next week) since the

15th of August and so far, knock on wood, have not gained any weight.

My doc also put me on Lasix to keep the water weight gain under control

and I think this has had alot to do with it (also have to take Potassium

though because of the Lasix). I am also trying hard to watch what

and how much I eat and this seems to possibly be helping too. I am

eating more, no doubt, but prior to all of this I never had much of an

appetite and tended to not eat enough so my body actually responds well

to an adequate amount of food going in (metabolism actually improves as

it tends to shut down when I am not eating enough). Anyway, it might

be worth asking about using the Lasix, atleast in the beginning to see

if this would help you too.

My other side effects have not been fun, however so far they have been

liveable. My "speeding" has not produced any productivity (dangit)

but rather just a feeling like I am plugged into a light socket and every

noise and the kids voices can drive me batty pretty quickly. Its

like all my senses are exagerated. I have a lovely moon face, that

yes, I'd say might well smooth out some wrinkles for you!! LOL

I have had some heart burn, although this one has begun to get better as

of late. Suspicion is that its the pred thats been causing my tachycardia

(racing heart), however this is a guess right now since there have been

some other issues with the heart, so we need to look into this one more.

I was a WRECK going on this med. We have a family history with

it, as my hubby has severe Crohn's disease and has been on it twice, a

long time ago, before he had all of his large intestine and part of his

small intestine removed. Both times the drug literally saved his

life, but almost killed him at the same time. And we were never able

to get him off the med through the weaning process...it was only when he

had surgury and they could do it in the hospital that they were able to

get him off it. Thankfully, he has not been affected long term from

what we can tell at this time. His side effects were intense...I

REMEMBER the mood swings and the weight gain and so on and so forth...so

when I realized this was what I was going to have to take, as you can imagine,

I cowered in a corner for a while...LOL.

It didn't help that I was not feeling THAT bad!!! I mean, my poor

DH was in BAD shape when he was put on it, so there was some relief in

seeing him feel better, even with the side effects. For me, there

are days when I feel worse on it than I did before. Makes it SO hard

sometimes to take it, knowing I am actually causing some of the ill feelings

with it. I know I have to, and am accepting that (begrudgingly),

but I am definatly not thrilled about it....LOL. Them wanting me

to increase it was a real tough one for me....still trying to accept that

one.

Anyway...just wanted to share what is working for me (using the Lasix)

and how the pred is affecting me, hoping it helps some. Its probably

a blessing that DH has been on it before so he KNOWS how I feel and is

a bit more understanding when I am feeling a bit wigged out...LOL.

Take care hun.

BIG hugs,

Lynn wrote:

Hi Vicki,

Well...this doesn't make me happy at all. A little

bit more about me...in 1998 I had gastric bypass

surgery and have lost 120 pounds. Osteoarthritis

really reduced my ability to exercise, and a poor diet

(in spite of what I knew) pretty much slowed the loss

to a trickle. So the idea of gaining back is really

blowing my mind.

I was on prednisone once for asthmatic bronchitis and

can remember asking the doc if I could stay on it

cause I lost a few pounds. Can't remember if I was

revved up, that was a while back...Now tho, I'm going

to have to find out what the prednisone might do to my

pouch. I can't go on any anti-inflammatory for

arthritis, it has to be Celebrex because of the harm

they do to the pouch.

So if DM is what I have, I guess I'm going to have to

go to the bariatric surgeon with a list of meds and

see what will do what!!! Wow, probably complicated

things a lot.

Highlights in my face?? Geez...do you suppose it will

smooth out the wrinkles???

Vicki!!

Darn!!! Like I need to hear this. Holy

smokes...shiny skin...slit for eyes...darn, Vicki!!!

I lost my Camel's Hump when I lost the weight! No way

is it coming back...

I guess I'm going to make a list of meds and send it

off to the bariatric surgeon...when and if they make

the diagnosis.

Tomorrow I see the rheumy (waiting to hear his take on

Dermatomyositis) and the dermatologist for a skin

biopsy.

I know, I'm just a fountain of good things to tell ya. I have to admit

that I gained the weight really fast.... within 5 weeks... But, I don't

think that's the normal course of things for people on prednisone.

I've always eaten a lot of food because I've always work out. My mouth

and tummy are use to it.... lol

But does the weight come off as prednisone is

decreased? I've never seen anything about that!

LOL.... Lynn, yes as the prednisone is decreased the weight does start

to come off. If you're able to do exercise that will really help. I've

only lost 20lbs so far but I also had to increase my Prednisone back to

10mgs from 2mgs. Now I'm not losing a thing. Hopefully I can get that

changed on my next doctors appt. this month.

Lynn,

's weight came off before he was off of the Pred. He puffed up at

first, it leveled off and then was completely off about 6 months before he

was taken off of the steroid. His last 6 months he was on a very minimal

dose. Children and Adults to differ on how they react to this disease and

the drugs, but is of normal weight at this time.

Lynn,

I gained 30 pounds while on prednisone for 9 months. I have been off it

completely since February and cannot seem to loose a single pound. I know

everyone is different, but that is my story.

Hi Bill... I'm curious about your " buffalo hump " ... Is that the same as what

I call " Dowager's hump'? It's a fatty bulge just below the back of the neck,

right? Is that caused by the weight gain from prednisone? Mine is quite

obvious now and it has ruined my posture. Why was the lipo covered by

insurance? What medical danger did the insurance company think it hold? Did

they tell you? Annette

Annette,

Camel Hump, Buffalo Hump, and Dowger's hump are all the same thing. In the

HIV/AIDS circles we call it Buffalo Hump because it is caused by an unknown

and baffling process called lipodystrophy. In liposdystropy the body moves

fat to the abdomenol cavity and sometime the back of neck. The fat comes

from the arms, legs, and face so there is a distinctive lipodistrophy look.

The lipo was covered by insurance because it was caused by my two disease

processes and medications such as the anti-HIV drugs, and Prednisone. It was

to improve " quality of life "

Would be happy to supply anybody with more information if asked.

Bill... Thanks so much for the explanation. It's the first time I've heard

that it could be the result of predisone, but it makes sense. Thanks,

Hi !

So nice to meet you! I read your intro...mighty

impressed with it and the way you're handling it.

It's no party, is it?

Yup, I'm hearing a lot about the weight gain...I think

your age will work in your favor with gain/loss! Not

that I'm jealous or anything! LOL...but at 52, I find

what my gram told me is true, as you age it is harder

to get those pounds off!

Since my diagnosis is still not made, I'd better give

myself a head start!!
