Guest guest
Hi there You are right- it is probably one of two things: heat rash/sweating or a pressure mark. My daughter had quite a bit of difficulty in her band intially due to sweating and heat rash. Lots of babies sweat, but she would get red angry heat rashes (sometimes with white centres), like spots, and sometimes covering quite large areas. They were also irritating to her, so the band would have to come off til they went away. Some babies just have very sensitive skin which is easily irritated and sweat more than others- some sweat away but it just drips off no problem! As for curing this, it can seem really severe and look very red and angry, but a few simple things will help. Try dressing Paige very lightly indeed in thin cotton only clothes, no socks in the house (you can pile them on when you go out), keep the heating down really low (so you are chilly), and take the band off at the first sign of trouble (if Lucia used to fuss round the back of her helmet or even touch it once, I would just whip it off!) I also limited any hot and sweaty exercise (such as the bouncy/jumperoo) to her hour off a day. It all sounds a bit of a pain, but if you have a child with this type of skin, they can really have difficulty in a band to the point where it is almost unwearable. The other thing is to go easy on the alcohol for cleaning. They do stink, and the temptation is to slather on the alcohol, but the cloth should be damp, not wet and just scrub away with that only once a day. Otherwise, in sensitive skin, the alcohol can irritate esp. in a pressure area. Hope this helps- it may be due to a pressure mark of the band anyway, which can only be corrected by the orthotist, but it might help to do all this as it may well be a heat related problem. Take care and good luck! Hannah (mum to Lucia, London, UK) Cranio grad > > Hello all! I'm hoping someone may be able to give me some good > advice. Guest guest
The only things I would add are taking the band/helmet off frequently throughout the day to dry it and Paige's head may be helpful. Don't clean it at this time just dry it. Also a bit of 1/2% or 1% hydrocortizone cream on the irritated parts (if it is indeed heat rash - bumpy). Rub in well and let dry thoroughly before putting band back on. na had this problem about week 2 in the band. The hydrocortizone took care of it. If I remember I'll send you a picture tonight showing the rash. mom to nahannah_farrimond <hannah_farrimond@...> wrote: Hi thereYou are right- it is probably one of two things: heat rash/sweating or a pressure mark. Guest guest
- Hi! My daughter got her Hanger band on 10/22. She also has eczema breakouts every now and then plus thick black hair. In the beginning her poor little head would be drenched in sweat when we would take the helmet off. It stunk really bad! Her forhead started to get red and eventually got a blister on it. I put a band aid on her forehead to protect it from contact with the Hanger band. Her forehead cleared up rather quickly and now the band aid is off. My husband and I wash her hair in the morning and the evening and give her a scalp massage. We've found that by washing her hair twice a day, it cuts down on the odor and she is actually sweating less (maybe she's just getting used to the band.) I also make sure to wash her band in baby shampoo (generic Target brand) twice a day. You might also consider putting lotion or a Cortisone cream on the affected areas, especially if your baby starts scratching. I've found that helpful with my daughter. Guest guest
Hi Cheryl, I see you got some great respones already and I really hope this clears up soon! Hopefully today's adjustment will do the trick. I always bathed Hannah in the morning b/c she sweated in it the most at night. I figured getting the sweat off would irritate her skin the most. Be sure the band is completely dry before putting it back on too, and use a fan if you need to! Great news that you're seeing improvements already! , mom to Hannah, DOCgrad Cape Cod, Ma > > Hello all! I'm hoping someone may be able to give me some good > advice. Guest guest
Yikes! You need to take the helmet off him. The helmet should not be making his eye swell shut or cutting him. If you think it looks too tight, than it very well may be. Do you have any pictures you could post? The only skin issues that are acceptable are red/pink spots that fade completely within an hour of removing the band. The problems you are describing could be caused from an ill fitting helmet and if that's the case the helmet could actually make his head worse, so definitely leave it off until you get things worked out. Where are you getting treatment? Do you know how experienced your ortho is in treating plagio babies? , mom to Hannah, DOCgrad Cape Cod, Ma http://hannahsnoggin.typepad.com > > My son has had his Hanger helmet for a week. Guest guest
Ouch! Like the others said, that should not be happening! Let us know what your ortho says.
