Guest guest
I haven't posted here in awhile but was wondering if anyone can offer info? My DD is 14 months old and born 8 wks early. She was born with tort and soon developed plagio but was not given the offical diagnois/treatment until 9 months. She recieves early intervention and they were the first ppl to educate me on plagio and tort. Now the words " scoliosis " have come up and I have noticed my DDs spine bulging out and wonder if anyone has had experience with this. I am reading that there may be a corrilation between the two?? Any help is much appriated. Thanx Ann Hope-14 months
Guest guest
Ann, I believe there is a link between tort and scoliosis. Hopefully someone will be able to point you to a research article. mom to na DOC grad SCAnn <myhushpuppy@...> wrote: I haven't posted here in awhile but was wondering if anyone can offer info? Guest guest
Which way is her spine bulging? The plagio might not be correlated as much as the tort. The baby's head is always being pulled over, which can pulled the spine over. My son's spine looked like a daffodil, with his head drooping sideways. I may be wrong, but I haven't seen much about plagio and scolio, more about tort and scolio. I hope some other moms with weigh in. Guest guest
Ann, I think I can shed some light on the scoliosis question from what I have learned as a parent of a child treated for tort and plagio last year. (btw we use early Intervention as well and found them to be great). The theory is that torticollis starts in the womb due to the baby getting into an awkward position and getting stuck there for some reason (such as cramped space due to a large baby, low amniotic fluid, breech position, etc). I notice some papers call torticollis a " packaging " disorder because of this. Other " packaging " disorders included hip displasia (dislocated hips), and scoliosis. So, there is a correlation of those issues with torticollis because they all can derive from the same root cause - awkward position in a cramped womb. My daughter was diagnosed with torticollis at 2.5 months - but it was not until she was about 9 months old that I came accross information (though my own research) indicating that she should be checked for those correlating disorders. We made an appointment with a pediatric orthapedic surgeon to have her checked out - and fortunately found that she did not have these additional complications. I would recommend that anyone with a child who has tort go to see an orthapedic surgeon to be checked out for these things. I don't know why all pedatricians don't just refer tort cases to orthapedics as a matter or course. If you are not already a member of the torticollis discussion group torticolliskids/ you might want to join there where these issues are often discussed. And, you might check out the www.torticolliskids.org website for more general information on tort.
