Do I wait until the IEP meeting at the end of the year to request Extended

Service Year or do I let them know ahead of time that I want it. I will

need to ask their speech therapist to write out her documentations.

Randie,

Yes, you can get the school department to provide speech therapy during the

summer. It's called Extended Service Year (ESY). Call an IEP meeting and

have it put in her IEP that she is to receive speech therapy as part of ESY

services. I can get my daughter sign language lessons this way utilizing

the

school districts sign language interpreters. MA just settled a case like

this. A blind student won the right to have braille lessons from the school

at a time that did not interfer with his academics or his non academic

subects. The argument that was used was his need for social skills and he

was

able to work on those during classes like pys ed. So the school department

has to supply the braille instruction during non school hours. I will look

for the case and send it to the group.

I wouldn't wait till the end of the school year. If special arrangements need to

be made

for your daughter, it will be too late then.

I do not see any reason why you can't get ahold of the speech therapist to

before the IEP meeting. this will help prove that she looses ground over the

summer. I have a friend who has has success in getting ESY for the summer. I

can ask her a general question about when the best time is to ask for ESY and

if it should be sprung on the team or let them know ahead of time that you

will be asking for it,

Call and IEP meeting and ask for ESY now. Most schools give almost automatic

denial. If you wait and do it in May they can delay, delay, delay and the

summer will be over before you are close to getting an answer.

Regression is not the only reason to give ESY services. Other reasons are

emerging skills, inability of parent to maintain current skills, and de-minimis

progress. Perhaps you can also argue one of these to help strengthen your case.

I was quite happy to say it was beyond my ability to maintain skills.

I was successful several years ago in obtaining ESY for my daughter. She has

had it every year since.
