I have been taking Opana ER (extended release) for over a year now, and it works wonders. It lasts the full 12 hours. I no longer have to cart around a box o' pills everywhere I go. It's a Godsend for me. Also, something I found amazing is that I don't have breakthru pain on the Opana ER. This is amazing to me, because I surely did with every other medication. Now, my problem with Opana ER is that it makes me feel so functional, that I no longer hide from activities, and I tend to think I'm superwoman, and then I overdo things and end up in pain. But that is not the Opana ER not treating the pain. It's me being ultra stupid and just doing too much, like a few weeks ago when I trimmed a tree with loppers in the back yard. I was sorry after I did that. The other problem with the Opana ER is that because it works so well, my doctor will not give me any breakthrough pain meds. Instead, he gives me muscle relaxants to relieve my pain when I overdo it. Jade
Guest guest
Jade, Thank you so much for your response about my question about Opana! I am in tears here! Oh, I pray that it works as well for me. I was on oxycontin 3 times a day with breakthrough meds too and it just did take the edge off of the pain, so I Still wasn't able to be very active at all and am in a wheelchair. It would be so awesome of the Opana worked better for me than the oxycontin! I have a big faith in God & as concerned as I was about changing meds, I felt maybe there was a good reason for it and that the new medicine would actually work better. Did it cause you to have any nausea or anything like that at all when you first started on it? Does it give you a buzz or that narcotic drug feeling at first? With my old pain meds, it didn't feel any different to me than taking Advil for a headache. No buzz at all, just relieved the pain! My dr. went ahead and prescribed the non-time release form for me as breakthroughs also as I was on breakthroughs with the old medication and he is trying to match as close as possible dose per dose what I WAS taking to the Opana usage. AGain, thank you so much. It would be awesome if I find I don't even need the breakthroughs!! and I am going to be taking the Opana ER 3 times a day instead of 2, as that was how I took the old pain med. One more question.. I noticed that the directions on the pamphlet said to take it either 30 minutes to an hour before eatting or 2 hours after. and if that caused stomach upset to talk to the dr. about different directions? Is that how you take it? ( Just thought you may have always answered the question about time before eatting and taking it when I asked about nausea.. me and my RSD brain fog!!!) Lynn W. Guest guest
I hope the Opana ER works for you, too. I do not think you would need to take 3 pills/day. The Opana ER is *true* to the 12 hours. Actually, I do not feel that I have missed a dose until I have gone for a good 14 hours. After 14 hours, I start feeling a little stiff. I think you will be fine just taking 2/day. I do not feel any high and I do not have any side effects from the Opana ER. Also, about food and Opana ER. The first 3 bottles/prescriptions of the Opana ER, the pharmacy did not label the drug with the food interaction warning. So, I had no idea, and ate with the drug, knowing that eating with my other meds always made them work better, so I just assumed - wrongly - that I should be eating with Opana ER. I no longer eat with the Opana ER, and I honestly do not think it matters either way as far as pain relief goes. But, just to be safe I take it as directed, which is one hour before or 2 hours after a meal. Which means, I have to plan my meals accordingly. Like I take one pill when I first get up, before I do anything. Then I feed and walk the dogs, and get ready for work, and eat breakfast. All this is about 2 hours from the time I took the first pill. At night, I take the pill when I get home from work. Then, by the time I take a shower, feed and walk the dogs, fix some dinner and get settled, it is time to eat again. I know I sound active, but I sure was not before the Opana ER. I owe my activity level and ability to live again, pain free, to Opana ER. GOOD LUCK with your Opana ER. Please try the 1 pill every 12 hours routine for a week or so and see how that works. Oh, the other thing, I take HALF the amount of Opana ER than I did when I was taking Oxycodone! And, I truly like the idea that I can take less, and get MORE! Ha. This is one instance where that statement is fact (for me). Smile. Wishing you well. Keep me posted. Jade
Guest guest
The reason that they have the food time restrictions is because they are trying to get you to take it on an empty stomach so that it will be absorbed quicker. If you eat with pain meds then your stomach has to digest the food as well as the tablet or pill. They work faster if the are absorbed into an empty stomach. Guest guest
Thank you so much for sharing all of this with me, Jade!! I will let you know! Not sure yet when I am going to attempt the trial. I only have a week's worth to try so may wait until close to the next doctor appointment so I can get the script for it instead of the old medicine then. I have my next cystoscopy to recheck for the bladder cancer Wednesday, Dec. 1. I sure would appreciate prayers from anyone that prays! Its painful for me and makes me feel pretty punk for a few days.
