Re: 10 week update/Active & Passive Starbands

Hi ,

Welcome to the group, and congratulations on getting started on

treatment for Jake!

The Starband was FDA approved as an active band, requiring frequent

follow-up for adjustment, and is clearly stated as so on the

manufacturer's website:

http://www.orthomerica.com/products/cranial/starband.htm

Overwhelmingly, orthos that order and offer the Starband do offer it

as it was designed, as an active band.

However, we have heard of a couple of locations so far where orthos

MODIFY the Starband to be a passive band. It doesn't depend on the

needs of the child, it is just the protocol at certain facilities.

I know NOPCO is one such location, and I can't remember the other

off-hand. Knowing whether or not your Starband is active or passive

could be critical information if you have an older baby, or a baby

with a complex/severe headshape issue that may require consecutive

bands, since in both of those instances babies will benefit from

active banding. Younger babies do fine in both active or passive

bands. Another way to find out if your baby's band is active or

passive, besides relying on the characterization of the ortho, is to

get the estimated adjustment schedule. With some variations, an

active band will require adjustments every couple of weeks, while a

passive band will be on a 4-6 week adjustment schedule. Do you know

what Jake's estimated adjustment schedule will be?

If you'd like to read a good description of the way that active and

passive bands differ, check out the files section of the group, and

read the document titled " What it means to be Dynamic. "

You posted a great question. Would you let us know if you find out

if Jake's Starband is indeed passive? Would you let us know where

you will be getting his Starband if it is passive so we could notate

it as such in the Helmet/Band Database?

Take care,

Christie (Mom to Repo'd Remy)
