Guest guest
I think SI is a lot of different things to a lot of people. Before we found out that was hearing impared, an OT at Speech therapy told us that has SID Sensory Integration Disfunction ( please understand that this was the same group of therapist's that never asked for a hearing test) anyway being the desperate mom that I was, with way to little knowledge, I agreed to heva the OT work with my daughter. Well, she spun on a tire swing which, we think caused more hearing loss because it effected the inner ear fluid. It was MAJOR DISASTOR. Anyway, I think all people with sensory deficits, hearing loss, have sensory problems. But I think Sensory Integration is for children that do not have hearing loss but still have sensory problems. Mabye sensitive hearing? ect. Sheri
Guest guest
So, in simple terms, what is Sensory Integration? Guest guest
Sensory Integration is how children process and react to all the sensory inputs in one's life. For example, distracted by noises, or needing extra noises to tune in. Or some people have problems with textures, foods, smells, soft or hard touches. My son is a picky eater, is very sesitive to loud noises (trucks, sirens), is sensitive to foreigner's voices, is extremely ticklish, and likes extra stimulation to his skin. His issues are considered mild. Guest guest
With Sensory Integration, some people also love to spin or strongly hate it. Some people seem to need extra inputs- like spinning. And hates loud noises ! My son is also negatively affected by loud noises. Even though he has sensory integration issues, I believe that this is more directly related to the hearing loss--perhaps someone with more knowledge can jump in here but I remember reading about a phenomenon called " recruitment " on the Listen Up site. Guest guest
Hmmmm, you both describe common characteristics of Autism Spectrum Disorder. Not to panic now, may just be something to look into. That's why they call it a spectrum, because the range of abillities is so large. Janet
