Guest guest
Terri. Join the club (and welcome and condolences). I just started going to a dietitian, and on pretty much the same as you. last week, i added counting fat and carlories, and will go back this week (i think) and see if we can go over that gain. we went around the grocery store, and the dietitian suggested that i eat quality meats (beef, chicken, pork, seafood) rather than burgers, hotdogs, but i still like those for convenience. i also get confused as to what to count where, but meat is protein and has no carbs (miniscule in hotdogs, sausage, etc., but there). i was told some where (either here or dietitian, and that's where i get confused) to eat meats with less fat (like forget bacon and the like), and the other place said to add them. that's why my head is swimming. my suggestion would be if you have a grocery chain with a pharmacy, check to see if they offer classes, either by the dietitian or pharmacist. i love lists, but i think you will get a better understandin of stuff (and you can ask questions and get one answer) from a dietitian, and then come back to the lists for more information. people mean well, but some are like me. they dole out information, but some of their facts are wrong. pat > so many more no's the yes's out there. > Any wisdom anyone has would be great to hear. > Oh,for now its diet and exercise to try and control my BG. Thanks > Terri > > >

Guest guest
i'm on 60 gm of carbs a meal. i do find that i do better when i cut that in half, but the dietitian had reasons (and for the life of me, i can't tell you), which is why i said i will probably flunk and repeat. pat > 50 grams of carbs per meal sounds like a lot even to me, and I'm more of a > moderate carb person. Guest guest
well, that's my confusion, too. the doctor told me (i swear he did) to cut down the protein, because i was gaining. i'm almost sure the dietitian said that the meat and vegies were fine, and that things that didn't have carbs did not need to be counted, but that does not make sense, because if i ate 3-4 large steaks every meal, i would be 500 pounds. so, i'm with you, i need to get back to the gal, and probably start all over again, and just try to blot out all the stuff i've put there mistakenly. and i think i need to take notes on that much better than i did. pat > my BG after 2hrs was 120 so I didn't > think that was too bad. Guest guest
Hi Terri! I'm Kim and I was diagnosed with Type II a little over a month ago. I'm on a 1500 calorie a day meal plan and I'm allowed 7 servings of carbs a day, but I don't eat all of them. You will find some great support on this list and a lot of different opinions, but everyone will agree that you have to find out what works for you and test, test, test. There's a great book out there called " Type II Diabetes: The First Year " (or something like that) that is an excellent resource. Although some here are on very-low and almost-no carb meal plans, probably the best thing to do (in my never-to-be-humble opinion) is to start with the plan you were given and see how it works for you. 50 grams of carbs per meal sounds like a lot even to me, and I'm more of a moderate carb person. Personally I have learned in my short time of dealing with T2 that I can eat most anything in very small portions, but I have to work it into my meal plan by either leaving something else out or exercising more to burn off the extra carbs. So try not to look at the food world in terms or yesses or nos or you'll go nuts thinking about everything you can't eat anymore. If I know I can have some if I want it badly enough, I'm fine. Having said that, I will say that once I got past the first few days of restricted carbs, I felt much better and the cravings for the " bad " stuff were much less. The first few days I felt terrible! Do you know what your test results were that caused your diagnosis? My HbA1c was 7.1. I'm due for a repeat test in September and I'm hoping for something in the 6's and maybe even a high 5 (but I doubt it). I lost 10 pounds very quickly after my diagnosis but I still need to lose about 50 or more pounds. Welcome! Guest guest
Thanks! I think its having to count everything that has confused me,now a days it doesn't take much to do that either,LOL! Now I love steak and plain old chicken, but I'm confused on how much. On the one list I was given it said 1 once,I cut the steak I had tonight in half, weighted it and it was still like 3oz. Well I cheated and ate it anyways,I didn't have lunch so...my BG after 2hrs was 120 so I didn't think that was too bad. Does cutting back on the meat have to do with weight loss or the diabtes?? I think that is were my confusion has come in. I will have to give the dietitian( I think that is who she was)that I saw last week and ask more questions and take notes!! Thanks for the welcome. Thanks >Terri Hi Terri, Welcome to the group! It can be confusing at first, but don't lose heart, it WILL begin to make sense after a while. My first advice would be to listen to your doctor and at least try to follow the plan given to you. The true test of how successful you are will be when you check your blood sugar. Around here you will hear the words, " test, test, test " . That is because Diabetes is a very individual disease and foods impact each of us differently. There are some general " rules of thumb " but even these can vary somewhat from person to person. The basic problem with diabetes is that your body is not handling carbohydrates very efficiently. This may be due to your body being resistant to your own insulin, or your body may be producing less insulin than normal. Whatever the primary cause, the insulin in your body is not able to open the cell " doorways " and let the glucose get out of the blood and into the cells where it belongs. There a many ways to overcome this problem. One is to limit the amount of carbohydrates that you eat. This will reduce the amount of glucose circulating in your blood. For more information on this method, click on the Blue " Recommended Reading " link at the bottom of this (and every) message. Another way to deal with the problem of high blood sugar is oral medicines and/or insulin. Some oral meds work by making your body more sensitive to the insulin that you do have in your body naturally. Others force your body to produce additional insulin. Others keep your body from absorbing some of the carbohydrates that you eat. The proper choice of oral meds depends upon a lot of factors. some people are very successful using them, others are not. Another term you will hear around here is YMMV - which means " your mileage may vary " . we use this term to remind each other that something that works for me. might not work for you. Best thing to do is to try and then, " test, test, test " ! Some of us use insulin and like the flexibility that it gives us. Others prefer not to use any meds at all and do very well on diet and exercise alone. The bottom line is - we are all here! No matter what you do, you will find someone else here that is doing that also, and others who aren't. You will get lots of feedback from us - we aren't bashful!!! ) Regarding hamburger, from a glucose perspective, the hamburger itself will not raise your glucose perceptively. The bun and condiments are another matter. Once again, welcome! Sorry you needed to join us, but glad you did! Rick
