Hi,

My name is and my son (born 12/22/03) just started wearing his helmet

yesterday. It's great to have this group to go to for information and to see

pictures.

We agonized over this decision for months before finally deciding that our son's

head

was not going to just fix itself. I hope to get to know some of you a bit better

and to

hear some more of your stories.

Question: our orthotist mentioned scotchgarding our helmet, but I can't recall

reading

anything about that in any of the files on this site. Has anyone else

scotchgarded their

child's helmet?

Thanks,

Hi ,

Welcome and thanks for the intro. This group and website is really

great, isn't it?

I'm glad to hear that is doing well adjusting to the band. Colin

has a STARband too; the inside has very thin layers of foam - and we

have been told to just use alcohol to clean it. I use 91% and it

hasn't stunk a day in 2 mos. I would sort of be leary of using

scotchguard. Maybe e-mail the manufacturer? I just really wouldn't

want that chemical residue on my son's head. But please let me/us

know if you find out that it is safe to use. It is so confusing when

orthos recommend different things for the same brand helmet.

I totally understand the agony you went thru! I didn't sleep for a

week. But I don't regret it and it's great when you see them acting

normally. Makes it much easier. Our story is pretty classic (I'll be

brief): born with a severe conehead then put on his back to sleep and

continued to have a flat head that didn't round out. By 9 mos. he

started wearing the helmet. He may be done late Sept. (12 wks, but

we'll see, I just want good correction).

Keep us posted!

Hi Sue,

It's actually good to hear of someone else who started the helmet a bit later.

I've been

a bit concerned that I started on it a bit on the later side.

In regard to the scotchgard--I was a bit confused. Apparently our orthotist said

that

SOME people scotchgard the strip on the side of the helmet (not the helmet

itself).

Sorry if I confused anyone. We are just supposed to use rubbing alcohol to clean

it.

Good luck with getting Colin's helmet off this month.
