Hi, , When I was in active Grave's, had RAI in Dec 1998, my doc

(retired Dec 2000)would check my reflexes and feel my thyroid on each

visit, which was generally once a month. It was used to check my high

or low levels of thyroid output. When my reflex was low, so was the

thyroid level test. When I had strong reflexes, my test was in normal

range. I was on tapizole from June 1995 thru Nov 1998. Went off it

twice, hoping I would stabilize but didn't. I still do the reflex

testing every so often and check my thyroid for size. I am presently

doing this about once a week, since I am in the process of switching

from a T-4 only med to Armour. My present doc has hypothyroid, so is

quite compassionate and understanding and listens, also. And he does

the reflex tests and thyroid feely thing to check for size.

yes

when i visited my new Dr for the first time i had fibromyalgia point,

all reflexes done, goitre checked in various neck positions including

swallowing, temp taken, weight, abdomen palpated and chest sounded,

blood pressure taken sitting and standing -and probably some other

things that i can't remember off-hand -it took about 70 minutes

After my RAI I had to go in to see my endo every other week. Part of the

exam was checking my reflexes to track my reaction times and palpating my

neck to see if there was any growth or reaction by the gland after the

treatment.

As the weeks passed my reflex reaction time slowed. As we approached the

six month mark when she whacked my knee and she could do a slow ten count

before I kicked... between that, the labs and no changes in the gland

when she felt it.... it was determined that I had not thyroid function,

that my gland was dead.... .as I was started on Synthroid she continued

to do the same tests along with many others (how much body heat I threw

off, reaction time for pupils, actual body temp, heart rate, blood

pressure, and more) to monitor if my body was 'kicking in' again. This is

the same doc that had me bring in my photo album to show progress on the

solar green house that I had designed and was building.. and how the

plants were doing... She said that watching the development on a project

like that was a great way to see how I was " feeling "

Hey Girl! How are you this morning? The only period that I

had a doc that actually checked me was after my surgery. I found a

wonderful Endo ( by dumb luck I guess) in Houston where I lived at

the time. Now I was real young (19) and didn't know doodly and of

course parents didn't ask docs anything except is she OK. Anyway,

he always checked everything. Unfortunately I moved away and no doc

since then has checked anything. And again I mentally throttle

myself for my Pollyanna attitude about my health. But you know if

you have no point of reference on how you SHOULD feel, you just

think it's part of the aging process until you get so sick that you

can't ignore it. I have tried to find that Endo but I am sure that

he is retired 'cause he would be real old by now. I'm waiting to

see how the doc treats my daughter and if he does good with her I'll

gulp and go see him. ( I found him on the good doc list) I hope

you have a great day. (Is it raining in Waco, it is here up-the-road.

Hi,

My name is Cathryn, and I just joined your grouped. Your post caught

my eye, as I have been treated for Hashi/ HypoT for 18+ years, and my

reflexes have always been tested. My Internist quit checking for

goiter only after the removal of my thyroid in '98.

I have seen a new Endo twice now, and both times he not only checked

reflexes, but he also checked the area where my thyroid should have

been while he had me drink a small amount of water. When I

questioned him about it this last time, he explained that the small

amount of thyroid tissue that must be left (on the parathyroid) could

regenerate.

I would search out new doctors, or maybe ask your current one why

they aren't checking this?

Not one of the 3 Endo's I've seen have ever tested my reflexes.

Mine did and they were hyper reactive, which I have heard is not the

usual for hypo patients, yet they have always been super reactive :).

, the only dr who ever tested my reflexes was a dr who was testing my

carpal tunnel syndrome when my left hand kept going to sleep constantly. Not

one of the 3 Endo's I've seen have ever tested my reflexes.

I was wondering.........

Has anyone ever had a thyroid exam that included checking reflexes, for

goiters, etc?I never have.
