I have had two epidurals for childbirth and they were wonderful! I was able

to communicate just fine to my doctor and in fact was able to push my sons

out with reasonable leg control, but didn't feel any pain...Just make sure

they give you enough! F.

I just went through hsy surgery last week and went under general anesthesiaand

woke up with back pain, but I was able to relay to them that I was in pain an

they adjusted my medication till I was comfortable. Inothing else moan loud

that's what the lady next to me did and it helped. I don't know much about

epidural, I've always refused them because it's given some in the spine and can

give back problems later. Ladies correct me if I'm wrong I'd like to know

myself for future reference.

I had an epidural with my labor which only worked on half of my stomach and then

had a cesarean and had to have general because the epidural did not work. I

have had pain in my back in the place the epidural was off and on since.

It is a very brief (seconds) burning feeling that is over so quickly. You

have to remain very still while it is being administered. I was in the

middle of contractions and moved, so they had to do it again. Don't worry!

i wanted to share my experience. i had an abdominal myomectomy about three weeks

ago. i am doing very well and each day i am getting stronger. i had a PcA and it

was wonderful the only problem i had was with itchiness, benadryl helped but i

was able to get up and go to the bathroom with no problems. i had full

sensations with my legs and i was not dizzy at all. it was my best friend before

i was started on oral analgesics. i am very skeptical about epidural especially

with the diminished sensation and all that goes with it. it also affect your

ability to void, the catheter that goes in your bladder usually stays in until

the epidural is gone.

Pamela, thanks for sharing. Did you have any pain when you woke up

in recovery? Also, what kind of incision did you have? One thing

I've heard about getting an epidural is that it blocks the pain

nerves during surgery so the body heals quicker. But I see your

point about having a catheter in. How quickly did they get you out

of bed?

I had a PCA with my UAE and was not at all impressed with it,

primarily because the morphine gave me a bad reaction and it did not

control my severe pain at all well. It made me very sick and

confused/disorientated to the point of being delusional.

When I was told I was prescribed morphine I was pleased, knowing how

well it had helped my husband after his spinal surgery. Little did I

know what could happen.

My major issue though related to how I could not get any of the

medical staff to acknowledge or deal with this issue - in fact they

seem to think that I was on a PCA so my pain control was in my hands!

I was so disorientated I had to be shown how to use the PCA countless

times and still I did not seem to grasp it. In fact I was trying to

ask for alternative painkillers as the sickness etc caused by the

morphine, plus the poor pain control, meant that I wanted to stop

using it as soon as I could. In fact I ended up going cold turkey

after 17 hours of vomitting, since I was unable to tolerate the

morphine any longer and it was five hours before i was offered an

alternative.

My confusion caused by the morphine had a sizable impact on my

ability to communicate my issues clearly. I had not trained my

husband to react to this issue [after all he though morphine was

ideal], so he just left me there in the hospital in such pain without

trying to get me help - he really thought I had asked him to leave

because I was tired, and not understanding it was due to frustration

because I could not cope with trying to communicate with him and the

pain I was experiencing at the same time. Others have suggested that

you agree a warning word/sign to show that you are in trouble to your

loved ones and I heartily agree with this. It is unlikely you will

need to use this but it will give you a degree of safety and

reassurance.

Don't let this happen to you - it has given me long term anxiety

issues, on top of the extended pain problems I had anyway.

I am sorry this is a nasty story but you asked. You can do more than

I did to prevent this happening to you.
