I sprayed my daughter's band with krylon spray. Once the smell was gone(overnight) everything is fine. I am also an artist and I specialize in children's themes so I have used a lot of paint products for kids. The spray will not hurt them in my experience. Mackenzie has been in her band over a month and I painted it the night we got it. As long as there is no paint on the inside foam, ( I have a DOC so I am not sure what is inside the starband) I would bet everything is fine. Also the Techs at Cranial Tech asked me how I painted hers and what I had used(spraypaint, deco podge, stickers, acrylic paint and 3 coats of poly varnish) and they did not act alarmed in any way. Take care,

Hi,

I see you haven't gotten any responses yet, so I thought I'd throw a

couple of ideas out there!

Have you checked the Files/Decorating Tips folder here at the

group? There are two files that list some decorating tips and

brands. Although it doesn't list what paints NOT to use owing to

toxicity, etc., it may be helpful to see what other parents HAVE

used. I think one file DID mention use of paint designed for

children's toys.

I also put in the subject line. created one of the

decorating tips files, and maybe she has some insight into safety

and whatnot. Maybe other parents who decorated bands can also

provide input about paint or decorating odor, when it faded, and

what they were okay with...

I think you made a great decision to call the paint manufacturer to

get some sort of guidance. I would be leery, too, and in the

absence of no concrete answer, I might look into seeing how to

remove the paint without compromising the Starband. You'll

definitely need to work with the ortho to find out what would be

compatible and not affect the bands function.

I wish I could be of more help, but I chose repo-only to treat my

daughter's plagio - we didn't do any band decorating, so I have no

first-hand experience to pass along!

Hi ,

I know of other parents who have used rustoleom products (not the

spray, but similar). They are designed for children's toys and

such. How does it smell now? Did they indicate how long it might

take to dry completely? Have you tried putting it in the sun? Since

you also used a primer (which is a good idea) it may be very

difficult to remove. When you don't prime the paint peels right

off. I used alcohol to remove the first paint job that had primer.

This was on acrylic paint. Alcohol is stonger than you think. If

you use something else you have to be VERY careful not to get it on

the foam - it could it it or be absorbed and cause skin irritation.

I know the doc band is not porous so once the paint was removed it

was gone. Not sure about the STARband but suspect the same.

Let me know how it's going. On a side note I am a Chemical engineer

and 1 ppm versus 50-100 ppm sounds OK but I understand your alarm -

this is your baby.
