Hi Becky,

Absolutely you need some education. Call your doctor and ask him/her to set

up an appointment with you with a diabetes educator. Talking with an

educator will help you to understand what is going on and how to handle

diabetes. However, bear in mind that the information the educator gives is

the same information that is given to every patient. Diabetes is not the

same for every individual. Diabetes is not a one size fits all. The best

thing to do, in my opinion, is to test two hours after eating. Keep a record

of what and how much you eat, if you exercised after eating and your

readings. This will help you more than anything to realize what you can and

cannot eat. This information will also be beneficial to your doctor if a

change needs to be made in your meds.

Exercising really helps to keep BG's (blood glucose) in control. Because of

the amount of exercise I do, I can eat more carbs.

Congratulations on the weight loss. As you continue to lose weight, you

should be more able to control bg's.

Ask any questions you may have. We are here to try to help you understand

diabetes and to offer support and encouragement.

hugs

Eunice

Hi! I am very new to this. Just diagnosed last week. I have been on

a medically supervised very-low-calorie diet since January. My two-

hour glucose tolerance test came back high. So, I have been very

diligent and have lost 30 pounds. BUT the recent glucose tolerance

test was also high (243) and my doctor says I definately have

diabetes. I am rather stunned and resentful after trying so hard.

My family on both side have diabetes and I have had reactive

hypoglycemia since childhood, but this still is all new and hard.

Also, all I have gotten from my doctor is the diagnosis by phone and

a perscription for glucophage. Shouldn't there be some type of

education conference or team? Do I need to call?

If your doctor is unwilling/unable to get you with a diabetes educator, call

your county department of health and/or the nearest large hospital.

I'd also suggest going to the nearest bookstore and getting a copy of Dr.

Bernstein's book and/or the Diabetes volume in the 'For Dummies/Complete Idiot's

Guide' series.
