Guest guest
Newbie question here: Is mouthwash SCD Legal? Does it matter if it isn't swallowed? What about toothpaste? Breathstrips? I've found that as my evil bacteria is dying off, my breath is becoming...errrr...ummmmm...a bit " gamey. " For the sake of those downwind of me, your advice please. Thanks! Guest guest
All of these things are OK, since they aren't swallowed. You can make choices of mouthwash, toothpaste and breathstrips to avoid ingredients you don't care for. But you don't need to worry about illegals in mouthwash and toothpaste -- and each of us makes different choices in the brands. I did notice that breathstrips often contained sugar, or at least the ones I looked at. I decided to avoid those, since I thought some of the sugar would be in my saliva, which would end up in my digestive tract to some degree if I used them frequently. Mouthwash and toothpaste doesn't linger in the mouth in the same way as breathstrips. Or so I decided. When I was dealing with mouth sores and bad breath from a candida overgrowth, I kept mouthwash and toothpaste at work, as well as at home, to use as necessary. Kim M. Guest guest
I've been avoiding mouthwash too as I figured it's the same as strips some left in the saliva??? - but if it doesn't affect you Kim- I have more guts to try it now ( since you usually tend to get the worst of most things - you poor woman!) someone here mentioned me making mint candy but not at that stage yet and also gargling with mint extract but haven't tried eileen 6 months scd > > > > Newbie question here: > > > > Is mouthwash SCD Legal? Guest guest
Eileen, Maybe you can get some recipe for home-made mouthwash since many contain so much junk. Even the ones in the healthfood store are iffy. Just a thought. Guest guest
I made the choice to continue to use mouthwash (and toothpaste) even if there were some illegals in it because I always rinse out my mouth afterwards. With breathstrips I wouldn't be rinsing, mainly because I'd be using them in a situation where water and a sink might not be available. Probably a minimal risk, using breathstrips I mean, but I thought I'd better be cautious during those first few years on SCD. I guess now I could use breathstrips without worrying too much, but I have become accustomed to using mouthwash, even at work. And of course now that my gut ecology is restored I don't have the breath problems or mouth sores any longer. My dentist has certainly made a few comments on how little I see him these days [grin]. Even the ones in the healthfood store are iffy. I use the Dr. Tichenor's mouthwash -- it's alcohol, peppermint oil, and a touch of arnica (which is OK as long as you aren't swallowing). No colors, no sweeteners, just PEPPERMINT! It's made here in New Orleans, and I swear by it. When I have a sore throat, I make it a bit stronger, and gargle with it -- it relieves the pain, and seems to knock the germs down a bit. I have not tried their toothpaste, and am not sure what ingredients are in it. Would not use breath strips for the reasons Kim cites. — Marilyn New Orleans, Louisiana, USA Undiagnosed IBS since 1976, SCD since 2001 Darn Good SCD Cook No Human Children Shadow & Sunny Longhair Dachshund

Guest guest
Marilyn, FAN-flippen-TASTIC. I'm buying this!! Do you get residuals for all these suggestions? At least some kind of kick back?!?! Well, you should. Guest guest
It has been freaky to me to note how white my teeth are since going strict SCD!My family laughed when I said this, because yes, dentists have been saying for an eternity to cut out sugar. But yeah, in my previous life as a total junk food (Twinkies, etc) addict, eating several-to-many daily, plaque build-up was always fast --visible within a week of a full dental clean and polish.Since starting SCD fully, existing plague disappeared and my teeth keep being a lovely white! I brush with just baking soda and and a smear of xylitol (the latter is illegal but my son's teeth were actively and quickly disintegrating from Celiac and I had to stop that).BadenMy dentist has certainly made a few comments on how little I see him these days [grin].__

(Mind you, I wouldn't mind figuring out how to make some $$ off all this, since I'm only working a whopping 4 hours a week these days.) But it's more important to see people feeling better. BTW -- WARNING: DILUTE the Tichenor's. <g> I dang near took the enamel off my teeth with an undiluted swig of it. <g> I use 5-1 water to Tichenor's for mouthwash, and 4-1 when I need a sore throat gargle. — Marilyn New Orleans, Louisiana, USA Undiagnosed IBS since 1976, SCD since 2001 Darn Good SCD Cook No Human Children Shadow & Sunny Longhair Dachshund
Guest guest
I've used Dr. Tichenor's off an on since I was a kid. I didn't realize it was made right here in LA. When I run out of what I currently use I'll have to start using that again. Watch out though Jodi, it is POWERFUL stuff. You might want to try diluting it with water the first couple times you use it. It does leave your mouth feeling minty fresh for hours. Guest guest
I wish this would happen to me. I was "diagnosed" with "milk teeth" when I was very young. I had an old country doctor and "milk teeth" is yellowing caused by formula. My dentists have always been very suprised at how little plaque and buildup I have on my teeth even before SCD. But, they will never be white and I won't use whiteners.
