Yes, they are illegal. That's why I packed mine in the suitcase that I had to check in... not the carry on bag. Thanks goodness the airline explained that to me when I called them!!!!

Just a note re: blue ice packs. The last time I attempted to take some in an insulated container, I was stopped by security in the Raleigh-Durham airport, and ultimately the ice packs were confiscated by airport security in JFK. So it seems that they're off limits.Good luck,Jill
