Guest guest
I am dying. I am on meds and a cream plus splints and lidocaine patches, that don't kick in until Monday which is my hand appt. Can anyone give me any ideas how to manage this pain or make it go away. I am not going to be able to handle it until Monday. It's been 3 days of constant crying and I can't deal with it anymore. Please someone give me some ideas. Guest guest
I am so sorry . I KNOW that pain and I wish I had something that would help. Do you think the splints help or hurt? What kind of cream? What meds are you on? I don't want to ask too much because I know typing only makes the pain worse. Are you sleeping sitting up? That helps with the pain. Normally though the CT pain is worse at night and not nearly as bad during the day. hugs)))Sharon This email is a natural hand made product. Guest guest
Sharon, I have lidocain patches, capasien cream(spelling). I was on tramadol. I was on vicodin 10 mg. I am back to my normal vicodin for my back as my doctor only gave me a 5 day supply of the 10's but that didn't even work that great. Yesterday and today has got to be the worse pain I have been in with this CT. Is it the very cold weather? I don't know. The splints hurt but they don't hurt. When I have them off they hurt more. So I am darned if I do and darned if I don't. I also take other meds like lyrica, fioricet for headaches (always have them due to a car accident) soma for my back pain but nothing I take is even touching it right now. I really want to go to the hospital (although, I told myself I wouldn't go) but my husband is just worried about the new deductable of $100. Don't worry Sharon, everything hurts so typing is really the lesser of the evils. Hugs, (Cry, cry)Sharon wrote: I am so sorry . I KNOW that pain and I wish I had something that would help. Guest guest
Are you keeping your arms and hands really warm? When mine would get cold it would always hurt more. Also keep your your back and shoulders warm. When my pain was worst it would seem like it came from my shoulder blades, down my arms to my hands. If you have swelling from water retention or whatever that will make it worse too. That's why CTS often come first when a woman is pregnant. That's when I first had a bout of CTS. Just after Challis was born it hit me so hard and the pain was horrendous. I was so numb I was afraid I would drop Challis! It did ease off after a few months but came back full force when I was pregnant for my second child. It went away again after he was born but returned some years later and never left me again until I had the surgery. So do keep extra warm. Wear a sweater/sweatshirt or wrap up in a blanket. Wear long sleeves and gloves if needed. I feel for you and I wish I could help more. One thing that I found was that massage made it worse. I don't know if that's true for you or not.hugs)))Sharon This email is a natural hand made product. Guest guest
Hi Sharon, I have had a fire going and sitting in front of it. But I think the cold cold weather (in the teens) is not helping me. Omg massage, no way, it hurts too much. Hot water is the only thing that helps somewhat. Cold water hurts so bad. It doesn't matter what I do it hurts really bad. I only have 5 days thank god. I have no idea what the hand doctor is going to do for me either. So I am frustrated and emotionally a wreck. I went in to get a shot and it took the edge off. It was dilaudid (2mg) but I can't do that every couple hours or every day. I am waiting for my doctor again. I feel he is wrting me off sense he referred me to the hand doctor. We'll wait and see but I have no patience anymore. Thanks for trying to help. I have tried almost everything I can think of. Guest guest
{{{{{{{{}}}}}}}} I've been reading this thread, starting with the post you sent the other day to start it. I'm so sorry you're going through this. How long have you been suffering with this? I don't remember reading about your CTS before I went missing (a month+ ago?). What happened to set this off so badly? You weren't rolling pie dough for Christmas were you? Kind of said in a joking way, but I'm serious, too. You clearly do not do well in the cold. My Mother suffered so badly years ago, when they "tested" her by having her plunge her hands into buckets of ice water. OMGosh! One friend, a few years ago, told me a cold can of soda, held to the inside of her wrist helped her. I thought she was insane! I LOVED holding my arms under hot running water. Heat felt sooo good. And in the shower wasn't the same as a faucet, water running directly on my arm(s). I would wake in the morning and just stand at the kitchen sink first thing. I'd let the water run until the hot was no more if I could. My CTS started when I was in my late teens. The tingling in my fingers, the numbing. It got worse. While pg with , my second, I was in so much pain! My Mother was visiting during that last month and she would make coffee, pouring me a cup just to hold (I didn't drink it while pg). And I would sit with tears rolling down my cheeks. I slept alternating arms hanging off the bed. I took an old metal lunch box, and would sleep with my left arm hanging off the bed, that lunch pail over my fingers holding my hand down and palm open. It was pure misery. And the pain in my knuckles it caused... oy! I had surgery on my right wrist in the early '90's, and my left seemed to be very afraid I'd do the same to it and it eased off a little (lol). Then came the summer of '99 and I was trying to crochet an afghan for my niece-to-be when my fingers went tingly, the numbing set in, then came the pain. Slight pain at first. Sure enough, Jenna was on her way. And that left arm was hell. It didn't ease up again, save for the difference after birth. During Maya's pg it was the worst yet. I finally had surgery almost a year ago. Ahhhh... relief. I can do stuff! I wish there were some truly good tips to give you. But the pain you're in is incredible and there's just not much to help with that, is there? I think anything I'd share that I tried, you've already done. Before my recent surgery, I had started taking Ibuprofen. Not a normal thing for me. And I realized I was taking a lot. Maybe it took the heaviest edge off, I don't know, but I was still in so much pain. While pg with Maya, I used Sombra every night, making sure to rub it into the back of my elbow and then around the back of my shoulder (Sombra, if you're not familiar, is similar to Ben-Gay but all "natural" -- pg, no meds), but the elbow was the most important. Before my first surgery I was given the splints/braces to wear 24/7. When I pulled the left splint back out (when pg with Jenna, I guess), I wore it as often as possible. After she was born, and the hormones changed, I went to wearing it only at night. Same routine when I was pg with Maya and then after she birthed. I took great care with anything I did. That hand and arm was babied, because I knew the pain that would come and I knew it wasn't going away. I would grab nothing, hold nothing, never grasp something small... not if I remembered or could help it (and you don't forget often, do you?). A piece of paper held in the fingers of that hand left me suffering for so long after. Stirring a pot, holding a handle, opening a jar or a can, twist ties (absolutely not! -- the smaller it was, the more pain I was in and for longer), pushing grocery carts, driving... all of it. Oh! When driving, I got into the habit of having my purse on my left side, against the door, where my elbow could sit on it. I did the same as a passenger. The wheel was managed with my right more than my left. Ya know, while pg with Maya, when I was driving, I did keep the A/C set to blow on that forearm and that did feel good to me. I found that keeping my arm straight, elbow unbent, helped some. Keeping my wrist from bending (it's a large part of having the splints/braces), was crucial. What are your splints like? Where did you get them? I know there are different types and I know some do nothing but make it worse. Your cream is the best I could suggest. The many meds you're taking aren't helping, so I can't imagine what might. Has anything helped?? I took Bromelain while pg with Maya, and for some time after, but it never seemed to help with mine. Akiba found it did help with hers though. You can get it through foods, but only if you eat an entire pineapple a day (lol). I know some people have a lot of trouble if they're typing. I never had that trouble. Different people, different CTS? (Maybe the difference is found, in part, in whether it's Repetitive Motion induced or not? Mine wasn't). Keeping my hand down at my side, noticing positions and what seemed to make it worse, helped some. I could not sit in certain chairs, or couches, because the pain was worse. Keeping above heart level is supposed to help with swelling, but with CTS I'm not sure that rule works. When my arm was elevated, the pain was worse. Though, when sitting (and driving), if I kept my elbow propped up (pillow or purse), with my forearm below it (all a very particular position and it had to be just right), then it seemed to keep the pain from reaching it's very worst. Can you afford the $100 for the ER? If you can, huny go! I wish there was something to offer. Do you have any of Lynn's 5-Herb Balm. If you do, I'd try that, too. I know there are other supplements that are supposed to help (a combination effect?), but I can't remember any of them right now. I can look to see what I can find, if you'd like? Maybe you have it there in your house. I wouldn't expect a big benefit, but every little bit is worth something?? I hope the hand doc is able to help you on Monday (it is this Monday, right?). Guest guest
Challis, Your mom told me about your CT. I did go into the hospital and got a shot. It at least gave me a few hours of pain relief, ahhhhhhhhhhhh. I have had problems with my hands from the age of about 30 with cramping and numbing but thought it was just arthritis and it was bcs I did a lot of typing. Over the years it got worse with stirring things, doing my hair, makeup or hanging on to anything small. I have just dealt with it for so long. Typing was the only thing that didn't hurt so bad. Good thing I didn't have a job as a cosmotologist. It would have killed me way back then. I have been hurting but again thought it was from getting old. But something started in the middle of the night. Swelling, tingling, numbness, pain up the arm into the shoulder and armpit that finally made me see the doctor about the hands and arm. He has always known about it but it wasn't enough for me to have treatment with them. He is my age and we talk and we compare things about "getting old". I have no idea what set it off. I wish I did. I do a lot of typing and always am doing dishes and things like that but the biggest thing is blow drying my hair. It's always been so hard but now can even do it. I have had my husband at times help me blow dry my hair. I would wait until he came home from work to take a shower just so I didn't have to do it. I was told to wear the splints 24/7 too and I thought they were hurting them worse but I tell you when they come off it makes it so bad so it's not good to have them off. I just need a break from them once in a while. Today and going to try to take a break from typing bcs it is actually hurting my wrists this morning. Strange, am dumbfounded why but maybe it's just bcs I have having such a problem. I go on Monday to the hand dr. Still counting the days. 4 full days to go. Have a great day, Hugs, :)Smyelin groovy wrote: {{{{{{{{}}}}}}}} I've been reading this thread, starting with the post you sent the other day to start it. I'm so sorry you're going through this. Guest guest
I hadn't told about the docs "testing" me with a bucket of ice years ago. That was in January 1970. I didn't have the CTS while pregnant with Challis but it hit about a month later and hit hard. I knew what it was because I had seen my mother suffer with it for years. The doctors just didn't know what it was back then. My mother was hit with it around 1962 and the docs had her in traction for it, thinking it was a pinched nerve. Can you imagine being in the pain of CTS AND having to sleep in a traction thing that made you sleep on your back? For me, pressure on a certain area of my spine always made the pain worse. I don't know if that's true with other sufferers or not. I forgot about pie dough rolling. That will get you for sure. Crocheting, kniting, sewing, crafting, painting.... anything done with your hands. When mine was so bad I slept sitting up on the couch. My couch at that time had rolled, stuffed arms on it that were at just the right height (kind of like Challis' purse while driving). I had my arm propped on the couch arm and a pile of pillows for the other arm. I took care of my Grandmother at that time and she would call me all during the night on the intercom. Between my Grandmother and the CTS I didn't get a whole lot of sleep. After my Grandmother passed away I scheduled surgery. I had one done and then 6 weeks later the other done. I had a surgeon who prided himself on how fast he did surgery. Let me tell you--FAST is not good when doing CTS surgery apparently. LOL Within 2 months I was right back in the CTS pain again. So I researched and found the best hand/arm doctor in Arizona. I had remembered a recent news article about a little 5 year old girl who had her arm shot off at the shoulder with a shotgun. This doc, Dr. ph, had reattached her arm and it was working fine. I figured if he could do that he could fix my hands and arms. I went to see him and he was wonderful! The only problem was he wasn't going to be taking my insurance any longer so he had me quickly scheduled for surgery on both hands/arms at the same time. He asked me if I could manage if both hands/arms were bandaged at the same time and I said yes. I wanted HIM to do my surgery so I would have said anything. LOL That was way before the little scope type surgery. Back then it was big huge bandages all the way to the elbow. He asked me later what on earth happened during my first surgery because it was such a mess. I had scar tissue wrapped around the nerves and he did micro surgery to remove it all. I also had big scars on my wrists from the first surgeon and Dr. ph used plastic surgery methods to reduce the scaring. I scar really bad because I develop keloids. Dr. ph fixed the CTS mess, did a nerve release on my left forearm, and trigger finger "clean outs" on 8 or 9 of my knuckles. It was a miracle! No pain, no problems with recovery (except for how to wipe my hiney with bandages on both hands/arms . Dr. ph told me I had permanent nerve damage from waiting so long for surgery. I have been able to return to some things. I can crochet but not for long, I can paint! and I can't sew with a needle--only a sewing machine. hugs)))Sharon This email is a natural hand made product. Guest guest
Wow the stories I hear about CT is scary but not enough to get me to do the surgery on both hands. Like I said, I can't take it anymore. I don't care that I wouldn't be able to wipe my hiny (LOL). I will have my husband do that LMHO. He can do something since I do everything in this house and all he does is go to work and then sit afterwards on the couch. Anything to take this pain away is good for me. I am glad you can still do things now. It gives me some home. I just realized that I have been texting alot with my new keypad phone and maybe that's what trigered it. I don't know. Hope you guys have a wonderful day. I feel so better now I slept a good night sleep without waking up in pain. I have been able to return to some things. I can crochet but not for long, I can paint! and I can't sew with a needle--only a sewing machine. hugs)))Sharon This email is a natural hand made product. Guest guest
Oh yeah! Hair! I'd have to take breaks, letting my arms down, when washing my hair. I went a very long time without doing much with my hair, too. I can imagine blow-drying hurts a LOT. I'm glad you found that little bit of relief after the shot. Wow, you really have been hit hard and fast with the intensity of this. And up into your shoulders? That's CTS that's been aroudn a while. Whatever kept you from feeling it like this all these years, it's too bad it won't come back until you have your surgery. I have no idea how old you are now... how long ago was 30? LOL HUGS, Challis Pain Carpal Tunnel I am dying. I am on meds and a cream plus splints and lidocaine patches, that don't kick in until Monday which is my hand appt. Guest guest
LOL And I followed her lead. LOL I knew what the CTS was for me, because of my Mom (and I remember my Mother sleeping sitting up for so long). I also knew I wasn't seeing anyone about my arms until I was back in Arizona where I could see Dr. ph. LOL I put off the second surgery because my insurance didn't cover him. It took a lot of researching and waiting, but I finally chose someone I felt comfortable with. The first scar is noticeable only when I point it out. The second left absolutely no sign. Even that bit I could see for a while after surgery is gone. And I got to watch the whole thing on a screen above me! Now that was cool! Dr. ph hadn't changed much since my Mother saw him. He still had his hippy hair in a pony tail, jeans on and wore clogs. lol He was young when my Mom saw him. By the age of 30 (? seems he was 28?), he developed artificial knuckles. That was enough to impress me. LOL My Mother's first surgeries really did leave such a mess of her wrists. Horrible long scars, purplish and bulgey. People would stare at her wrists in the store. Thank goodness she found a better Doc and thank goodness the methods of surgery have changed. We have a friend who came over from Scotland. He's just into his 50's and something is very wrong with his forearms and hands. He was told long ago that it was CTS (it's not), but that he was "too young" to have the surgery. WTHeck?? LOL They told him the CTS always comes back. Bull. After my last surgery, I was itching to go out and do stuff! As soon as I was able, I dug a hole. That was wonderful! LOL Soon, , very soon you'll be able to dig holes, too. (lol) ) After suffering so badly, it feels so good to be able to do things and not suffer through that pain.
