When my daughter takes her 20mg Zyrtec/150mg Zantac daily (1st dose when she wakes up, 2nd dose 8 hours later) she is completely hive free. There is not a blemish on her and you would never know she has CU but if she misses a dose or is late taking her medicine she breaks out all over and it can take a couple hours for the medicine to kick in.

If I'm on pred (usually at least 40mg/day) the hives completely go away,

otherwise they're pretty much always there. Anywhere from just a couple of

hives to total coverage...

My question is: For all of you, when you are on treatment do your

hives go away? Do you ever have skin unblemished by hives or are

they just always there and the treatment makes them less itchy?

I am on Predisone now. Hate to go off. Almost done with the pills and I know the hives will come back but at least for a week and a half I have been hive free and not swollen. Guess you have to take advantage of the break from itching.

When I'm on Prednisone, my hives are completely gone and I don't have

itchiness either. However, I don't take pred all the time. I try to burn

the hives out with a staggard dose of Pred and then I am just on Allegra.

So far, I've had to go back on pred after a couple weeks from when I've

stopped taking it, so I don't even know if the Allegra is doing anything. I

also take Prevacid for heartburn associated with my hives.

my hives go away completely when I am on treatment. However they reappear rapidly if I am late taking medication. I started on 125mlgs off cyclosporine twice a day and have reduced the dosage over two years to 125mlgs per day I cannot get the dosage lower than this as the hives come back in large amounts.

-I am 29 and started getting hives at 28 years of age just out of

the blue. They cannot find any allergies or ANYTHING!!! I have tried about

10 medications. I have been so depressed about these. I have gained

weight, can't wear certain clothes, can't sleep, etc. I am getting married

in June 2002 and am already stressing about the hives. The medicine

cyclosporine, does that have any side effects? Do you know what causes your

hives? It feels so good to talk to someone who knows what it is like to

deal with hives. Thanks for your time. Marie

My hives are mostly gone now. Itching is still present, but relatively low.

My problem is and has been that I everytime I try to taper off the Prednisone the hives return. My dose of Tagemet and Proventil have remained constant though.

Hi Marie,

Glad I could help. I see an immunologist, for my hives. He's based at a teaching hospital so the medication is subsidised, otherwise it is very expensive. I don't know where you are so I can't help with the doctor thing. Nice to see your sense of humour holding up and don't laugh but I have trimmed my moustache ( good job I'm blonde ) a couple of times. I can't wax my face, three guesses why not.

-Thank you so much for getting back to me. Here is how I am

looking at it...a beard I can shave...hives I can't. HA-HA! Gosh, it

really isn't funny, but I have had to learn to laugh or all I will do is

cry!!! I may talk to my doctor about this medication. What kind of doctor

do you go to? I have been seeing a allergy specialist. No help. I have

already done the Zyrtec things with no success. I may see what my doctor

thinks about the cyclosporine. My hives seem to come out real bad after I

exercise, get real hot, or am VERY stressed. Fortunately, I am blessed to

have a few days where I hardly have any. I feel selfish in complaining

anymore about these. I see people with no legs, etc. and I feel guilty

about moaning about some hives. However, they have disrupted my life. I

get so depressed sometimes. Also, the last place I get them if ever is on

my face. I am reading this emails where people have them all over their

face and their eyes swell up. There is a guy that I work with that gets

them worse than me, but the Zyrtec works for him. Lucky! I already feel

more at ease knowing that their are people out there that understand what I

am feeling. Again, I appreciate you getting back with me! Marie

-I just made an appointment with my regular doctor to talk to them

about the medication. Yes, it gets VERY expensive. I live in Colorado and

go to the National Jewish Allergy and Asthma Hospital at $2500.00 a pop. I

am blessed and only had to pay $5.00 for each visit. However, the

medication did cost me. My fiance said if I grow a beard that I could dress

up like a man this Halloween. He thinks he is a comedian! I am thankful to

have him. Thanks again for the info! Marie

I was on prednisone for 20 months 60mg per day while doctor tried to diagnose problem. excessive use has caused my teeth to break 5 so far, kidneys to weaken, i have maintained a bladder infection successfully for 4 months now, unknown autoimmune disease etc...and I have been steroid FREE for 9 months. BEWARE of the prednisone, it is a wonderful fix but not for long term. God Bless

Hi! I take a combination of antihistamines but always have some hives. I

understand antihistamines suppress about 70% of the symptoms, or something

like that. Sometimes they are just there and don't itch but usually they

do, especially if I have rubbed or scratched absentmindedly. My skin never

looks " right " anymore - it's always blotchy! best wishes, Carol
