Guest guest
Hi, I was wondering if, besides ear misalignment, is it common for babies with positional plagio. to have one ear appear slightly bigger than the other? I know with torticollis or head tilt, one ear may appear to be lower than the other, but just wondering about actual ear size and shape differences. Has anyone noticed if one ear is noticeably larger than the other or has a different shape? I know none of us are symmetrical, but just wanted to know if it occurs more with this condition. We have also seen a few banded babies who have one ear that may be folded down a little at the top. Are there any articles on ear abnormalities related to positional plagiocephaly? Just curious, because we may include some information in our appeal packet regarding this; it may be another indication our baby's plagio began in utero. I would be interested in hearing personal experiences regarding this and/or links to related articles. Thanks, in SC
Guest guest
Hi , Thats a great question, and I'm really not to sure about any articles or anything. I will say though that my daughter's severe plagio was formed inutero due to her being positioned extremely low my whole pregnancy. When she was born, both of her ears were folded down, but it was much worse on her flat side. We were told at the hospital that it was so badly folded it may actually never fix itself and that she may need surgery. Luckily it did eventually pop up after awhile, but she does have a dent in her cartilage where the fold was. I'd say her ears are the same size though. Hannah did not have tort either. , mom to Hannah, DOCband #3 3/30 Cape Cod, Ma > Hi, > > I was wondering if, besides ear misalignment, is it common for babies > with positional plagio. to have one ear appear slightly bigger than > the other? Guest guest
Hello My daughter Willow had tort and then plagio, but I don't think her ears are a diff size. Have you asked your ped about this? Guest guest
My son Connor, who's almost 7 mo., has a difference in his ear sizes. He has tort and plagio. Somewhere I heard that this can be caused by in utero constriction, but I can't remember where. I'll let you know if I think of it. Guest guest
Hi , Ear sizes is a subject which I raised a number of months ago. Our son Adam has one ear bigger than the other, the bigger ear is on the same side as was the flatness, on the side of the head. It appears that was due to him lying on on his left, due to his stiff neck. What occurs, is that by lying on one side all the time, the ear on that side is squashed, so the tiny cartildges in that ear are squashed, making that ear larger. I think I read a post a couple of weeks ago from someone saying that simple surgery to the bigger ear, could make them look the same size. I hope that is of help to you, but if you have any more questions please ask. Reards Ian, father, Manchester England. Guest guest
, Thank you very much for sharing your experience. (By the way, I've read many posts by you - and you have helped so many people, including myself). I'm glad Hannah's ears have corrected on their own. Our daughter Meredith does not have folded ears, though I've seen some babies in the waiting area at CT that do. One of Mer's ears just looks slightly bigger than the other. I was just wondering if both those conditions suggest the plagio started in utero. Meredith didn't really sit low during my pregnancy, but she did go past her due date, arriving the fifth day after. (Sometimes I wonder if the minor car accident we were in days before her due date, made her too scared to come out. Just kidding. I am very grateful to God, that we all checked out ok after that fender bender). Anyway, I am trying to assemble an appeal to our insurance company and note anything we saw early on that could be related to Mer's plagio. Meredith's plagio is " more than moderate, but not severe " , CT said. We would have started treatment much sooner, if our ped. had listened to our concerns from the start and identified her condition. We had put too much trust in him. Mer was 11 1/2 months old when she was first fitted with a DOC Band. She has slight neck tightness on the non-flat side, but no severe torticollis. We're doing exercises CT suggested for her range of motion. We will find out in early June, if a second band will be beneficial. We're open to anything that would continue to help her head shape out. Hannah's story is encouraging and I wish her continued improvement with her third band. Thanks, . from SC (Mommy to Olivia (4) and Meredith (14 months - DOC Banded at 11 1/2) > > Hi, > > > > I was wondering if, besides ear misalignment, is it common for > babies > > with positional plagio. to have one ear appear slightly bigger than > > the other? Guest guest
Hi Sandy, Thanks for your response. I asked our ped. early on about her ears and he offered no explanation, but said we could consider cosmetic surgery at some point, if we wanted. (Our ped. didn't recognize Meredith's plagio; we asked time after time about her head shape and like many, were told " things should round out on their own " ). It wasn't until we found info. online - that we realized she had plagio. We immediately asked to be referred to a neurosurgeon and later had her fitted for a DOC Band. Meredith doesn't have tort. but has some neck tightness on the non-flat side, for which we're doing exercises. Thanks Sandy. We will probably ask our CT therapist at our next appt. and then also the cranial facial surgeon about her ears, when we see him in June. He will determine if a second band would be beneficial, since we're nearing the end of treatment with this first band. I hope Willow is doing well. Guest guest
, Yours is a very interesting question to me. I took a look in the studies search engine which we have listed in the links/plagio studies and research to see what might be there. Although I couldn't find anything that mentioned both ear size asymmetry and plagiocephaly, there were a few that mentioned ears and uterine constraint (one of the possible causes of plagio.) Here are the links to the studies summaries (if the link is two lines long, you may need to copy and paste the entire link to your address bar to get directed correctly.)
