This is my first post. I had 10 mCuries of I-131 last Wednesday

for a WBS and thyroglobulin check after 2 thyrogen injections.

Today, (1 week after ingestion) I went to a laboratory on a

university campus and my neck registered of the scale on the

10x setting and the 100x setting. Unfortunately, I did not do a

reading with the 1x scale. I was too amazed at how radioactive

my neck is a week after such a small dose. I have been told that

I didn't need to follow any precautions after the scan with my

children ages 8 and 12year old. Was this a mistake? Also can I

assume that the amount of RAI detectable with the counter

means that I my still have thyroid tissue in my neck and I need

surgery and or treatment?

If anyone can anwer these questions I would appreciate it,

because I am going crazy waiting for the results of my WBS and

thyroglobulin test.

Sincerely,

TT 3/00

--Sorry, I just joined the group and I didn't see all the geiger

counter messages from the last week or so before I posted. It is

pretty cool to hear and see how " hot " you are with the counter.

Hi, - I don't know a lot about the answers to these, but I'll

give it a shot, and let other more experienced folks give more detail!

I don't know anything at all about the thyrogen or how that changes

things - there have others who are using it. Am I right that the

10mCi was for a body scan? I imagine that the results of that will

tell you if you need RAI.

When you have a chance, please tell us a bit about your history (kind

of like the stuff I have after my name)

I suspect that it is because it is a pretty small dose that you

weren't told to take precautions, but I don't know at what level you

SHOULD. I know I have been told I don't need to take any when I get

my 2-5mCi scan dose next Friday, but I plan to keep my saliva to

myself and not share it with my hubby just in case!

Cheers,

Alisa
