Refrigeration to medications that can absorb moisture causes condensation issues making the tabs harder to split and reduces potency. But the moisture absorption factor makes total sense, too, since no silica packet is included. Guest guest Posted April 2, 2004 Report Share Posted April 2, 2004 My habit with all tablets that I buy in bulk or that take more than a couple of weeks to use up.. is to fill smaller bottles from the larger ones and then seal the larger ones, then take my doses from the smaller bottles until they need to be filled again. If the bottles do not contain a silica pack I make my own... you can do that by taking a square of tissue or paper towel and putting some corn starch in it.. then just fold it up and drop it in the bottle... The corn starch absorbs the moisture and keeps the tabs from absorbing it... I sometimes wonder if that's why my tabs split some much better than some folks?? My smaller bottles, the ones that are opened most frequently are kept in one of those snap lid plastic parts bins. That is kept sealed and only opened when I need to refill my pill boxes. I got into those habits when I was care giver for my mom, after her brain surgery. I had to make sure that all the pills maintained potency and such.... later I was reminded of the importance of proper care when a bottle of my Synthroid, that didn't have a silica pack in it, molded. The pharmacist called me a liar when I went in for another bottle... Until I dumped the funky mass of gunk out of the bottle and onto his counter. IN FRONT OF EVERYONE!!! Then he replaced the tabs. After that I was always careful with everything. Janie buys hers for a year at a time and freezes hers until ready to use... I've never tried that... Also, there is one brand of Natural thyroid, I forget the brand right now, that MUST be refrigerated, but it's bottle specifies that. So now I'm trying to figure out what to do if I go on a 10 day trip lets say. I try and get a room with a mini bar.. most good... and not so good hotels will rent you one for just a few dollars extra... people travelling with infants often need one for formulas etc.. so its quite common. This refrigeration will ensure that Thyrolar remains potent and stable. If you leave Thyrolar outside the refrigerator by accident, please call Forest Pharmaceuticals at 1-, ext. 7301. My guess is that it is because of the T3 and T4. Thyrolar pills are 2 sided. One side is white, the other is a colour. Thyrolar 3 is white and yellow. And it could be the way they are manufactured. The air in the bottle is probably pretty dry, but even if not, that small amount of air would not have much moisture. When you open the bottle with cold or freezing pills, they have a whole room full of air from which to draw moisture. Blessings Debbie. You let them know at the door that you want to shop at the pharmacy and they will let you in. You can then make your pharmaceutical purchases without a membership card. (For all other purchases you still need to be a member and show your card.)
