Guest guest
Our PBS TV station re ran a program about museums in Cuba and brought back a childhood memory. When I was nine years old, nada sent me to a Spanish camp that lasted for two weeks. Nada told me that she was working straight afternoons and there was no one to watch me. I am confident she went on vaction with her current boyfriend, the camp was just a place to park me. The other children were all Hispanic and no English was spoken. I did not speak nor understand any Spanaish and I had never been around anyone that spoke another language. I spent two weeks trying to follow what was going on. eating when everyone ate, riding in a canoe across a lake. Bumbling along the best I could. Another example of nada's parenting skills. Guest guest
OMG that's really low !! how tough and scary it must have been for you !! Did at least a counselor speak English ? My nada sent my sister to girl scout camp for several years in a row, i refused to go and told her if she sent me, I would a huge pest out of myself and they'd send me home..I was worried nada would 1) get rid of our dog or2) move away since she threatened these things all the time... Guest guest
Connie-- (((((HUGS))))) on this one. The isolation and everything else (for TWO WEEKS?!) must have been horrible. Truthfully, that's the stuff out of nightmares. I have similar camp stories. I can feel all of that stuff again just reading your story. It was awful, and I can certainly validate that for you. Camp gave me some of my worst emotional memories growing up, and that's saying something! But at least I understood the language.
