When To Graduate?

My child recently graduated from his starband unexpectedly at 10

months old. He wore it for about four months off and on due to some

fit issues. Of course we are thrilled. However, I have heard that

the band should be worn through the night until 12 months old. He has

a 5mm difference currently. (It was 11mm four months ago!) so is it

okay to keep it off of him indefinitly, or could he flatten again

without use? He had Torticollis that is unresolved. He currently has

PT once a week, but continues to resume the his " comfort positions " in

his car seat and when he sleeps. I'd love to hear what you all think

about this.

Hello Sara,

I'm no expert, but I would think that at 10months old and 5mm asym,

that tx should not be finished yet.

Would your ortho, and you for that matter consider a second band? Or

is there still space in the current band for adjustments?

Can you post some pictures?

You should really work on resolving the torticollis as well. That is

a major deal. Regression at this age is very rare. I believe is is

under 1%.

Good luck, and let us know what you decide on.

Hi Sara,

It's really a personal decision when you want to stop. If you are

happy with the where his correction is at now, that you have your

answer. There is a risk for regression too w/the unresolved tort,

though it is unlikely. If I were you with a baby still so young and

still having 5mm assymetry and unresolved tort, I'd go for another

band. When you said you had fit issues, do you know if your orhto

was experienced? Do you have any different facility options in your

area?

Hi Sara!

Does it still fit and could he possibly only wear it when napping or

just at night maybe for 4 wks or so? If it is so unlikely that he

will regress (less than 1%) and you are happy with his head shape, I

would be inclined to just stop. He's going to continue to grow

outward. Do you see a ped neurologist or cranio-facial specialist or

just your primary ped? We all know what the ped will say. Let nature

take it's course. I'd love to see how he looks now. My son has a

Star too and is almost finished. I will let you know what I honestly

think. I tend to be on the conservative side...

Sara, I agree with the others. At 10 months old, there is still

time for improvement. Unless you're happy with the correction.

is right, it's a personal choice. I know I would have done

another band on if they thought it would do anything, but at 20

months, the brain growth is too slow to do anything else. So I have

to deal with the asymetry he'll have forever and kick myself in the

tushy all the time for not doing the band sooner.

Anyway, to answer your question, there is a possibility of

regression if the tort is unresolved, but I don't know the %. I

know after 7 months, the skull is already starting to get harder so

it becomes more unlikely it will happen unless he's constantly on

that one side and not changing sides and staying off his head by

sitting up, walking, crawling, etc.

Keep a close eye on it obviously. Hope the Tort gets better soon.
