Hi!

I’m , and I’m new to the list – and pretty new to the idea that I might have MS. I have not seen a doctor since I was in the Air Force (1986, goodness I’m getting old!), except for “spot repairs†like stitches and getting my eye “rebuilt†a couple of years ago.

I am 51. Something has been a bit “off†since my late twenties – loss of coordination, unexplained aches and pains, memory “blipsâ€, all things that come and go. Sometimes worse than others. Then about 4 years ago I had what I think now was my first really bad attack – for over a month I was in so much main I almost couldn’t move, was “frozen up†like the Tin Man without his oil can, staggered around like a drunk, couldn’t follow a conversation or a show on TV, had to go “potty†what seemed like every hour on the hour, all day and night. This roughly coincided with Lent, and we were trying hard to be “veganâ€, so I just put it down to the change of diet. When all the symptoms went away (practically overnight) I was just relieved and didn’t think any more about it. There were occasional recurrences of weird stiffness or stumbling or whatever, nothing more than a day or so.

The beginning of August this year, one day my right hip “gave out†under me, and when I tried to walk there was a burning weak feeling in the muscles on the front of that thigh. By the next day, all the muscle spasms, weakness, etc were back, with very strong cramps in the back of my right thigh and the top of my right foot. If I was still for more than a couple of minutes everything “froze upâ€. Had all the same symptoms as that first bad one, and added tripping over nothing with my right foot, and a weird buzzy-tingly feeling all over. Was so exhausted that I couldn’t do any chore all in one go – had to keep going to lie down in the air conditioning…

This time we were NOT “fastingâ€, so I didn’t understand what was going on – went online to AARP, WebMD, several other “symptom checkersâ€, thinking there was some vitamin or something I was short of. Two results kept coming up – a stroke (I don’t think I had 2 just the same!) and MS. When I did a little reading on MS, everything suddenly started to make sense… Talked to a couple of RNs I know, and they think the same.

I’ve sent off paperwork to the VA to try and be able to use the local VA clinic and hospital; I’m covered by TriCare (my husband is retired USMC) but there’s no way we can afford co-pays on MRIs and all the other testing required, not to mention meds. So now I’m waiting to hear back, and happy to report that my symptoms are mostly gone again-

Except the buzzy feeling, which is a little annoying but not too bad.

I found this group while searching out more information – hearing other people’s actual stories and so on seems more helpful to me than all the medical jargon. Hope you don’t mind I’m here without a diagnosis or even a suspicious Doctor..

About me – have been married to Himself for 26+ years, have 2 grown children, 3 grandchildren, 10.5 housecats, 3 dogs, and 10+ acres of Wyoming not far from Devil’s Tower. I like reading, sewing, embroidery, knitting, cooking, gardening, so on, and I spend way more time than I should hanging around on the Net.

Thanks for having me!

I was a closet rebel - my dad was active duty for 32 years - he never succeeded in getting me spit and polish - I did give the reserve in MO a run for its money - I did bail them out in an IG - paperwork was not their long suit

I came home to Ft Sill in 1985 and went back to college - I had classes with retirees that served under my Dad

One day at a time - ignore the idjuts - keep hollering until they do something - if it is not normal to you - holler louder

That's just one of the wonderful things about this group. You don't have to have a diagnosis to be here.. All you have to have is the suspicion or a family member, or someone you love who has it. We're here to lend support and information to those in need of it.

Welcome to the group! My name is Val. I was dx'd a little over 20 years ago. I'm glad you are with us and I hope you find your stay here, welcoming and of great use. We are a fun loving bunch of caring and giving people and we want you to be well.

Love and blessings...

Thanks for the

welcome!

Had

to use Tricare two years ago (wow, this month) to get my eye “rebuilt”

– slipped in the shower, shredded my retina. They came through and

paid with no problem, but the copay on a $6000 surgery was still pretty steep –

don’t even want to think about what it will be when we start in on lots

of lab work and MRIs and and and….

So am waiting (fairly) patiently to see if I can get VA – there’s a

clinic here in town, and the state VA hospital about 1.5 hours away on

the interstate, so would be much more convenient than going to the base in

Rapid City or trying to get in at an (expensive) civilian doc…

I’ve

been a military brat, active duty, and a military wife – now I’m

sort of a civilian, and have to teach myself that I can speak up, disagree, say

“no” to doctors now. I think it will be good for me.

Definitely! Right now I just get to wait – but you know, it may

sound strange but just having a “maybe” explanation for all the

weirdnesses is kind of comforting! I can be “studying up”

while I wait, to be an informed patient when I finally do get in somewhere.

Welcome from an Army brat, Navy wife and Air Force mom. Haven’t had

anyone in the Marines or Coast Guard yet.

This is a great group to learn about MS

and to vent with the frustrations of having it.

I am 47 and have been diagnosed 5 years. I am currently on one of the CRAB

drugs and am doing well.

Feel free to ask lots of questions, there

is a wealth of experience between the members of this group.

Thanks! I

probably will have lots of questions, because there’s such a difference

between the med. stuff you read and the actual experiences of real people…

Speaking of

questions, I do have one about diet. I see all sorts of “don’t

eat –eat” advice all over the Net – does anyone have info on

what really works for them? In a few more weeks we will be going as “vegan”

as possible for Advent, and I’d like a little imput on whether or not

that seems to be a Bad Thing or a Good Thing…

Thanks!

I am 51. Something has

been a bit “off” since my late twenties – loss of

coordination, unexplained aches and pains, memory “blips”, all

things that come and go. Sometimes worse than others. Then about 4

years ago I had what I think now was my first really bad attack – for

over a month I was in so much main I almost couldn’t move, was

“frozen up” like the Tin Man without his oil can, staggered around

like a drunk, couldn’t follow a conversation or a show on TV, had to go

“potty” what seemed like every hour on the hour, all day and

night. This roughly coincided with Lent, and we were trying hard to

be “vegan”, so I just put it down to the change of diet. When

all the symptoms went away (practically overnight) I was just relieved and

didn’t think any more about it. There were occasional recurrences

of weird stiffness or stumbling or whatever, nothing more than a day or

so.

The beginning of August this year, one

day my right hip “gave out” under me, and when I tried to walk

there was a burning weak feeling in the muscles on the front of that

thigh. By the next day, all the muscle spasms, weakness, etc were back,

with very strong cramps in the back of my right thigh and the top of my right

foot. If I was still for more than a couple of minutes everything

“froze up”. Had all the same symptoms as that first bad

one, and added tripping over nothing with my right foot, and a weird

buzzy-tingly feeling all over. Was so exhausted that I couldn’t do

any chore all in one go – had to keep going to lie down in the air

conditioning…

This time we were NOT

“fasting”, so I didn’t understand what was going on –

went online to AARP, WebMD, several other “symptom checkers”,

thinking there was some vitamin or something I was short of. Two results

kept coming up – a stroke (I don’t think I had 2 just the same!)

and MS. When I did a little reading on MS, everything suddenly started to

make sense… Talked to a couple of RNs I know, and they think the

same.

I’ve sent off paperwork to the VA

to try and be able to use the local VA clinic and hospital; I’m covered

by TriCare (my husband is retired USMC) but there’s no way we can afford

co-pays on MRIs and all the other testing required, not to mention meds.

So now I’m waiting to hear back, and happy to report that my symptoms are

mostly gone again-

Except the buzzy feeling, which is a little annoying

but not too bad.

I found this group while searching

out more information – hearing other people’s actual stories and so

on seems more helpful to me than all the medical jargon. Hope you

don’t mind I’m here without a diagnosis or even a suspicious Doctor..

About me – have been married to

Himself for 26+ years, have 2 grown children, 3 grandchildren, 10.5 housecats,
