Hi Jodi and everyone, Because BTVC brought such fast and tremendous benefits to my Celiac/ASD son, I assumed dairy (and all other legal food he was eating) was not problematic. Know what I mean? All of his acute issues were quickly resolved so I felt delighted by the degree of change and basically viewed any residual stuff as inconsequential compared to what we had been going through pre-BTVC. I figured any 'tenacious' issues were just part of being human, or

not resolvable, or would heal in time, or would be resolved upon more

research. ie. Like with most diets or medications, when we see a dramatic result, we tend to assume this is "as good as it gets". That's where I was at.So yes, six months in I chose to remove dairy, when we needed to restart anyway, primarily because GAPS recommends this tweak for ASD, depression, OCD, etc. Upon

making the change (actually a multi-faceted approach), I've been blown away by the further successes in both his physical and cognitive being and delighted by the changes in mine.Cheers,Baden

Hi Jodi,Son's original symptoms: waking completely every 2-4 hours from birth to SCD; could not eat any food (just breastmilk) until after his second birthday; zero language for first 2-3 years; stunted growth (started out above the top percentile and dropped to 5th in under two years); behavioural things like bashing head on floor when people would sing together, or screaming while snaking backward across the floor in strange fits; OCD; teeth disintegrating (lack

of tooth enamel); paleness; iron-deficiency anemia; and finally chronic diarrhea. I'm

probably forgetting stuff, too. So, a lot of that is Celiac (dx'd) but some is more specific to ASD (not dx'd but

assumed by his early workers).My original symptoms: severe anxiety and depression from early

childhood, then the additions of OCD, etc. Fatigue. Severe muscle weakness. For three years, complete physical debilitation. Funny little seizures (complete loss of vision, blacking out, etc). Hallucinations (auditory, visual, tactile). Enormous sense of stress (even before my child was bashing his head, etc). Etc. In the first run of SCD, I basically did (for

my son only) everything as outlined in BTVC --we did the intro, including dairy, for a couple of days then just went ahead with everything else. My son had excellent results: normal poop, then normal sleep, on the first day. Cheeks went rosy. Day 3 spoke his first sentence. Whacky behaviour all but disappeared. Teeth healed. Etc.Four months in, after my poor organization on a trip led me to give him advanced foods and illegals, we had to start over. I figured I might as well do it thoroughly, carefully, methodically to gain maximum awareness and results. About that time, I happened to read GAPS.Its multi-faceted approach --again, specifically for people with mental/cognitive issues-- involved:removal of dairyas there is no yogurt for most people, addition of capsule probioticprogressive intro starting from meat/bone broths with well-cooked veggies and boiled meats and working our way up in a specified

approachanimal fats stomach acid and digestive enhancers such as ginger tea, juice of

homemade sauerkraut, etcthen, one at a

time: egg, then current items stewed, then ghee, then avocado, then nut butter, etc (always with the meat/bone broths to help digestion)I enjoyed this approach becauseit was deliciousit was satiatingI felt unbelievably nourishedit didn't feed the yeast overgrowth (which I believe is a big issue for my son and I)it was simpleit was effectiveIt was pretty bizarre to experience an abundance of digestive juices! My son got all happy and calm again. My most severe OCD symptoms simply disappeared at some point and I have felt clearer all round. No depression, no anxiety. Quite the opposite: happy, calm, positive, relaxed. I've even been able to add a 3/4-time course to my load this month!We have recently had our first setback. I believe (but am not yet sure) that it is because, while visiting my vegan brother for 36 hours, my son had several (legal,

stage-appropriate) meals with no animal broths involved. My brother is so beautiful in making my son SCD foods, but the vegan versions seem to hurt my son. As GAPS asserts, my son does indeed seem to require ghee or animal broths with virtually every meal. Yesterday, upon our return home, I went nuts on the broths all day and the evening's poop was much improved.That's actually a good example of what I meant by 'multi-faceted'. ie. It's not just removal of the untolerated and enjoying the rest, but rather eating tolerated legals while ensuring sufficient amounts of the helping foods --the anti-inflammatory properties of a properly prepared broth; the digestive aids of sauerkraut juice, ginger tea, black pepper, etc.Cheers,Baden

Hi Baden,

I am so happy this approach is helping you and your son. That is

truly wonderful!

I purchased a couple of books on Amazon including this one and I am

waiting to get it. I am thinking of incorporating -some- of these

ideas into my regimine. I have to be careful though since fats can

make my RUQ extremely uncomfortable. I do feel malnourished lately

and for the 4-5 days I have had nothing but watery D (not too much

pain, just bouts of pain but a tremendous amount of gas. I am going

to the loo over 10+ a day. I felt this coming on a week ago) I am

unsure as to what I am doing wrong??? I associate this to abnormally

long PMS and allergies acting up.

A couple of questions;

How do you make the bone broth? Does it come out very fatty?

Also, do you make your own ghee? the few times I have tried I messed

the batch up and all of this wonderful butter went down the drain. My

brother showed me how to make it and I also saw a demo online but

there is something I am missing.

The probiotic that is used is that sourced from a non-dairy source

kind of like what GI Prohealth has- made from chicory root?

This sounds so interesting and I would love to feel more satiated.

Hi Jodi,Sorry to hear you're having a lot of symptoms right now :(Re: bone broth. It has a bit of natural oil in it, but not much, ie. far less than a broth made with a whole chicken, for example. To make it, I first save (freeze) the bones from several chickens. When I have a bunch, I put them in a pot of water, add a splash of apple cider vinegar and simmer for 8-48 hours. I put one pound of butter into a loaf pan

and heat at 250 degrees F for 60 minutes. Then I gently ladle out the white stuff that has

floated to the top, ladle the golden stuff into a jar, dump the white stuff at the bottom.Re: probiotic. GAPS protocol is that a person can use any brand she prefers (without FOS or other illegal fillers/binders). -McBride simply suggests we use a high quality one containing a variety of strains (differs here from Gottschall) and in high concentrations.Does any of that help?Hope you're feeling better soon, Jodi!!Baden

Have you ever tried making it on the stove-top? My oven doesn't work

properly and all I have is a small toaster oven.

Is storebought ghee legal? I saw it at whole foods today and it didn't show any illegal ingredients on the label. I think I read somewhere it was illegal.

Misty,

Making your own ghee is so much more cost effective. It's quite easy

as well. Following directions I guess isn't in my nature or maybe NOT

one of my strong points :P
