Guest guest
I am 23 years old and have had urticaria for five years. I work as a nurse but have had to take lots of time off due to the urt. I am going to ask my doctor to do me some blood tests for thyroid function as I have read on these pages and from MYra that there is a link. My urt is very bad at the moment, my eyes have been swollen for 48 hours and the antihistamines do not help that much anymore.I am so glad that this group exists, I dont think that people understand what it is like to have urt and so at least I know there are lots of people out there who know what I am going through. Does anyone know if there is any research going on in the world into chronic urt? surely someone must want to find a cure for it? For a while last year I felt quite positive and tried to concentrate on ignoring thr urt but now I have given up hope ,it beats me everytime. Please feel free to write to me and cheer me up With love to all the hivers out there ( Bristol England ) shaslam@... wrote: > ANA positive is antunuclear antibodies. Guest guest
dear Judy, reading your message struck a real chord in my heart.I am also very tired all the time, people think I am lazy but I am always tired cuzz of the medications, up to 150mg Atarax a day.I am lucky my partner is good he understands up to a point but no one does unless they suffer CU I think after five years I would have learned to live with it, but when I am bad, I seem to go inside myself and every attack makes me feel the same. The only meds that I can take is Atarax and Benedryl. Nothing else helps at all. Prednisone for the really bad times, but it takes such a massive dose, I'm afraid to stay on it any longer than a couple weeks. Penicillan, sulfa drugs, and codeine cause what I call the extremes. I had to be hospitalized when I was 17 and a doctor gave me penicillan for tonsillitis. My dr. tells me I will have this the rest of my life, since it has gone on so long. When I read about everyone else having depression, weight gain, and all the rest my heart goes out to them. I've been through that too. I don't think it's the pills that put on the weight as much as the meds make you feel so lousy. Who wants to even get up when they're on 100 mg benedryl 3 times a day and 50 mg atarax at night. That's usually what I take in a days time. Zrytec/Zantac was no help whatsoever. I also think the antihistamines keep you depressed. You're always so tired. And it's worse when you're husband thinks you've been to the doctor, you have medicine, so now its your own fault if you're not better. I think that helped caused my first divorce. He just couldn't understand or any sympathy was beyond him. I also hold down a full time job. Most of the time i'm half asleep, but I've been doing it so long that's ok too. lol. Guest guest
I was at the doctor last night so I thought I would ask him a few things. - guess what Zirtec does not cause any weight gain at all according to him. - I am ANA positive, so it looks like I have auto immune disorder causing my urticaria. Does that mean I am no longer idiopathic? Anyway refered to a rheumatologist so I should get an appointment in around 3 months. And Judy - vaseline intensive care lotion is the only thing that relieves my hives. In particular if you get the green one with aloe vera and cucumber it is immediate relief. It takes all the heat out of my hives and they stop itching and disappear within five minutes. I am changing doctors. He refused to give me my blood tests, said there was no need. I asked him six times for them, and told him that they were mine and I wanted them. he finally relented. =

Guest guest
-- a positive ANA does not necessarily mean a whole lot. This is a test that is known for false positives in a lot of cases. So unless you have a positive ANA and symptoms of something specific they do not pay much heed to this test. That is what I have been told by several doctors anyway. I have only seen 14 doctors in the past year and a half. john - In urticaria@y..., shaslam@e... wrote: > I was at the doctor last night so I thought I would ask him a few things. > - guess what Zirtec does not cause any weight gain at all according to him. > > - I am ANA positive, so it looks like I have auto immune disorder causing my > urticaria. Guest guest
--- Hi Bert I am not a sufferer, but the mother of a teenaged girl who has CU and Angio. She gets very low, just like you. She feels as if she was a terrible person in a previous life. I am glad of this list as well. We fought for years to have bloods and skins done for , and are still fighting to get her condition recognised. I am pleased to see that you are working in the health sector, they will be more understanding than my boss was, I had to take a lot of time off to look after and my boss would completely ignore me, even when the school phoned the shop and explained that they thought she was anaphalactic. I was off for 6 days because she was a total wreck and he ignored me for a week. PIG. Some day some-one famous will suffer from this and then they will start serious research on it. Take care and keep your chin up xxx Jacquie In urticaria@y..., BERT <stbr26939@c...> wrote: > I am 23 years old and have had urticaria for five years. Guest guest
shaslam@... RE: Your blood tests and doctor refusal to give you copies. When you finally got the copies is that how you found out you were ANA positive? Some doctors would like you to believe you are not entitled to your own records. I think it is incredible. I work in auto insurance bodily injury claims and encounter it time and time again where doctors will tell the patient they can't have their records. I have to educate people all the time that it is their right to the records. As for your urticaria no longer being idiopathic, guess the rheumatologist can tell you for sure, but sounds like you have your answer. Sorry for your bad news, but glad you have an answer. I am sure it is not the answer you wanted. I actually prayed they would find something in my blood work, just so I could have an answer. I know that is sick, but after 22 years I want an answer. Take care!
Guest guest
, Don't let it get you down. I know there is much research going on out there, but who knows if we will ever have an answer. I am sure many of us will never have an answer. Seems hives can be caused by just about ANYTHING and it is often impossible to find the exact cause in a person. Keep demanding bloodwork. I don't know what it is like to have my eyes swollen shut for as long as you have, but I have had my lip and eyes swollen in the past. I know it is not fun and hard to keep spirits up, but keep at it. This group is helpful, and supportive. Hope your swelling goes down and you can get back to work soon. Take care. Reply-To: urticaria To: urticaria Subject: Re: urticaria Date: Wed, 14 Feb 2001 23:13:08 EST Judy, I can't believe it, 34 years!!!!! I was 9 when mine started. I am now 31 so I have had this for 22 years!! Have you ever had remission? I never have. Only time hives were better was when I was pregnant, but now 6 months after pregnancy they are worse. So you must have had this when you where pregnant too? Did it get worse after pregnancy? Better? Do you have any medication allergies? As far as the vaseline, might have just been coincidence, or the rubbing helped sooth. I never experienced anything such as that to ease the itch. The only thing that does ease it is, to put on pants if I have hives on my legs and to put on long sleeves if they are on my arms. Something about the fabric against the skin helps sooth the itch. I still can't believe you have had this so long!! I never thought anyone in the world has had it longer than me!! So goes my hope that I might one day figure this out. I am doomed!! Just hope the meds don't kill me. I guess that is my greatest concern with this whole health problem. I am told the hives won't kill me, but what about all the meds I am taking? That is scary! Take care. _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com

Guest guest
Do you by any chance have an asthma inhaler (albuterol)? I find that helps stop the swelling sometimes. Another med that has helped me in the past (besides prednisone) is ephedrine sulphate. If it starts to interfere with your breathing, go to the ER. Guest guest
I'll answer what I can for you, Shona. Lupus is not the only autoimmune disorder associated with urticaria. There are many other autoimmune problems that can occur concurrently with hives, such as rheumatoid arthritis (sorry, that's the only one which comes to mind - other people in the group can tell you more about it than me). Symptroms of Lupus (From my med book): " Symptoms frequently flare up & then subside. Episodes generally include fever & fatigue, plus any 4 of following: rash, usually on cheeks (referred to as a butterfly rash, since it appears on both sides and across the nose); ulcers in mouth; red palms and hands; joint pain with redness, swelling and tenderness, but no deformity; swelling of face & legs; shortness of breath; rapid or irregular heartbeat; chest pain; hair loss; swelling of lymph glands; protein in urine; increased sensitivity to sun; anemia; mental changes, including psychosis. Lupus often falsely tests negative, sometimes for several years. " Pred - that's short for prednisone, a steroid drug that many of us have been on. It has many nasty side effects. LOL - computer shorthand for " laugh(ing) out loud " As for the last two questions, I dunno! ----Original Message Follows---- From: shaslam@... Guest guest
Hi, . As far as I know, she had them all her life, even as a little girl. She always had mild ones, luckily for her. Heat and sunlight bothered her, so she stayed as cool as she could & used an umbrella when she went out in the sun. Shortly after my grandparents married they moved from Virginia to Saskatchewan, Canada (much cooler there!). She swore by her pine tar and sulpher poultices, even convinced me to try it once. Stunk like you wouldn't believe, and it didn't help me. I don't think she ever had swelling or giant urt., largest I ever saw was welts about the size of a nickel. Guest guest
Hi If you have no luck in Bristol, it might be possible to get a referral 'out of region' - I think the Chief Medical Officer has to approve this, but I've been given the go ahead to choose my own specialist. Quite hard work getting there, but might be worth a try. Guest guest
Hi, My daughter is two and has had chronic urticaria for two years, beginning when she was 5 months old. And yes when she has a bowl movement she can get an outbreak of hives. I believe this may fall under the category of chonlinergic urticaria because some bowl movements may cause you to "push". Anything that my daughter does that causes her to "physical" meaning excercise, even when she is tired or angry, can cause her to have hives. She has other forms of urticaria as well. Did they give your son any medication? What kind? Atarax works very well for my daughter. I wish you the very best. It may help to look under types of urticaria on the cu website www.nerosworld.com/icus I wish you the best I know how frustrating this is. Good Luck~~Alena's Mom URTICARIA MY 14 YEAR OLD SON WAS DIAGNOSED WITH CHRONIC URTICARIA. WE HAVE MAD SEVEN TRIPS TO THE ER. NO DOCTOR CAN EXPLAIN WHY THIS HAPPENS. HE WILL ONLY GET AN PUTBREAK WHEN HE IS HAVING A BOWEL MOVEMENT THAT REQUIRES A LITTLE PUSHING. PLEASE LET ME KNOW IF YOU HAVE HEARD OF THIS SITUATION. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~If you do wish to unsubscribe then you can click on the following link: <mailto:urticaria-unsubscribeegroups>~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~This list is in the service of those who suffer from Chronic Urticaria (hives).
