Guest guest
n, do you have any favorite links on Barrett's? I could do a search, but would prefer more knowledgeable recommendations. <g> A while back, my Sister said she wondered if her Huny might have this. It's a constant endeavor to find the answers... This is the same person who has tried many diet mods and various supplements (including probiotics, enzymes, as well as vits and minerals...), had allergy testing and reacted to pretty much everything (beef and rice being big), explored Celiac, considered IBS, on and on and on it goes for her... Challis Back from Endoscopy! Hey Guys! Well my endoscopy is done and over with ! Phew! I guess it went ok. It was my gastro doc that did the test.He told me he would go down and check it out and depending on what he saw he would biopsy. Well,he did biopsy but I dont know why or even were. He said he will get back to me. He is very nice and genuinely concerned. He put the throat numb spray and also gave me anastesia.I dont remember much except gagging a lil on the tube but it wasnt so bad. And the recovery time wasnt bad either. But the admitting, paperwork ,and going over my diseases took hours. He said I may have discomfort. Like gas, burping, maybe bloating and some pain but that too is ok so far.I am suppose to take it easy and drink lots of water and rest alot. Im so tired from the anastesia. My gastro doc is very good looking and sweet and After I made some comments about this to the nice nurses.lol. Never would I have done that!lol.but ive never had this or anastesia either.Had iv saline so maybe 2moro will feel refresd.:)hugzcassy
Guest guest
First, he would have to have an endoscopy or a gastroscopy (clear through the esophagus into the stomach). They take biopsies to rule OUT Barrett's Esophagitis or cancer. It is very important to have this examination done and soon. One cannot play around with "heartburn," a stupid term anyway-- any pain down there is wrong, unusual, serious and not good. Etc. However here are some links on GERD and Barrett's esophagitis. http://www.medicinenet.com/gastroesophageal_reflux_disease_gerd/article.htm http://digestive.niddk.nih.gov/ddiseases/pubs/barretts/ http://www.medicinenet.com/esophageal_cancer/article.htm http://www.medicinenet.com/proton-pump_inhibitors/article.htm Proton pump inhibitors which are used to treat true esophagitis are Rx drugs such as: Prilosec, Prevacid, Aciphex, etc. This is life-threatening stuff; Tums or Pepto-Bismol just do not solve the problem. If the person is drinking coffee (especially with caffeine), strong tea, any form of alcohol, lots of sweets, etc., life will have to change a lot! Tell your sister to get that guy to a gastro-enterologist like yesterday! Love to you, Challis. Thank you for asking and please do keep us updated on all this, as your sister might allow. Love to you, your sister, and hubby, n Back from Endoscopy! Hey Guys! Well my endoscopy is done and over with ! Phew! I guess it went ok. Guest guest
Thanks, n. With your permission, I'd like to pass this onto them both... removing all identifying markers of course. ) Would it be okay? Only recently did the "reflux" start up again. She'd had it under control for awhile. Nothing really makes sense as to causing it to happen again. She calls it "up-chucking", while Sis and I say "reflux". LOL No antacids. She really has done very well in taking good care and avoiding such things... that is good. Coffee only rarely and in small bits, not sure about tea though it would not be a regular occurrence (perhaps only certain Yogi teas, and the like, when ill -- herbals), not a lot of sweets, and alcohol consumption would be very minimal I believe. How does irregular intake play in? I would think when the problem isn't addressed properly, every little thing has the chance of worsening it... Yes? When it is properly addressed, do even the little bits aggravate the problem as badly? Or is it more of a crap shoot? When a Doc was seen, asked for testing and such, he was less than helpful. Chalked it up to IBS and handed her a prescription. That dx does not address many symptoms and when she asked "what about ___ and ___", Doc said "oh, that's something else" yet offered nothing more. Not acceptable. Being limited, due to insurance, is not helping. The Specialist who did the allergy testing wasn't much more help. They sent me copies of the report. Wow. My Sister won't mind me sharing at all... especially if it might help find answers. ) Challis Back from Endoscopy! Hey Guys! Well my endoscopy is done and over with ! Phew! I guess it went ok. Guest guest
Sure. I know. I have had Barrett's. My cousin has had adno-carcinoma of the esophagus following diagnosis with Barrett's--she is five years out from chemotherapy and radiation and is doing beautifully. But had this been diagnosed earlier neither she nor I would have had to go through what we did. Absolutely dreadful. Makes me so angry at those OTC advertisers! Love to them both, and feel free to send anything that I have sent to you, Challis. Love, n Back from Endoscopy! Hey Guys! Well my endoscopy is done and over with ! Phew! I guess it went ok. Guest guest
OMGoodness, that is scary. I'm glad to hear your cousin is doing well! I'm going to share this with them, too. Thank you, n. Guest guest
Uh! Oh! I misspelled "adeno-carcinoma" but please do pass on. The TUMS and other antacid people have probably caused more harm by leading people to believe that it is NORMAL to have "heartburn!" If he has a thorough exam and all is well, they may look for what is called hiatal hernia, at the juncture of the esophagus to the stomach--I have this, but no cellular signs of damage now. There is just so MUCH that can be done to avert disaster. My cousin may have gotten hers because Barrett's Esophagitis and resultant adeno-carcinoma are now known side-effects, albeit rare, of Phenytoin, aka Dilantin. It pays to keep one's eyes on the web! Guest guest
hehe, I'll edit the post to correct that misspelling before sending. lol I would not be surprised if she is found to have more than one thing going on.
