Guest guest
Hi Helen - Welcome to the group!!!! I'm sorry to agree that juice is probably going to have to leave your diet. My nutrionist put it this way - it's like having 10 oranges without the fiber. In other words, pure sugar. That's why diabetics who sometimes risk going too low use juice (or regular soda) to QUICKLY bring their sugars up. Ane even then we are talking 1/2 a cup is all. You probably would do yourself some service to learn about carbohydrate exchanges. Can you get the services of a dietician? My HMO based insurance plan included a couple sessions with one. Or what about a diabetes educator. It sounds like your doctor just threw some meds at you and said stop eating sugar. That is far short of having complete advice. With the carb exchanges you can experiment and see what you can handle at a meal or total for a day. It's important to count carbs and not just eliminate sugar because carbohydrates are a type of sugar (complex). So if you have a sweet tooth, maybe you can have a small bit of chocolate for a snack if you know how many carbs you can tolerate. An " exchange " = 15 grams of carbs. I have read in several books that the recommended amount is 4-6 exchanges at meals and 1-2 for a couple snacks a day. For some people 6 exchanges at a meal would be too much. Many more people I know stick closer to 4. I would try to get some better information and maybe a referral so you can get a handle on this. Also, are you testing your own blood. Another problem with my original doctor is she just threw meds at me, did not tell me to test and said come back in 3 mos. She told me nothing about diet. It took awhile for me to get enough information and get referrals to medical professionals who could help me. Keep asking questions here and read read read. A good starter book is Diabetes Type II the First Year by Gretchen Becker. It's available as an inexpensive paperback. Good luck!!!
