Guest guest
Mish, Your post jarred my memory about something similar that we saw in Remy in her younger months. Although she was never in a band, she had an exaggerated " startle " reflex, sort of an all-over body shake every so often. It could be something that scared her, angered her, as well as something she really loved, just any really strong emotion. I observed this when I took away a toy she wanted to hold, when we were at the zoo and she saw a giraffe up close, when she would see the flying car scene in Harry Potter (her favorite, she loved that scene!), or when a stranger leaned in too close to her face. It was very strange looking, and used to upset my husband since that body movement resembles a seizure or something like it. I did notice that when this happened when she was really young, it was more difficult to figure out what was triggering it. When we went to a neighbor's house for Halloween last year, Remy did her all- body shake when the other little girl showed her a Fisher Price vanity set, with little lipsticks, etc. (she loves make-up), and it looked weird enough that the neighbors commented on it. In Remy's case, over time, her big startle reflex (which I think was more of an emotional rush) episodes became shorter and much less frequent. In fact, I think that the little shake at Halloween was the last time I saw her do it. As she had matured and got so much more verbal, she seems to express herself in words, shouts, squeals, and jumps in those same situation. I never really worried about her body shakes, because I instinctively felt she was just expressing a huge range of enthusiastic emotion and would grow out of it. How old is Colin? Was there anything going on at the time of the " shivers " that you could determine could be stimulating some sort of response? Did your friend notice anything around Colin that could have helped him to " startle " himself? I wish I could be of more help! Guest guest
Hi Mish, This could have absolutely nothing to do w/anything, but this post made me think of a recent post on the iparenting born in 12/02 board. I'll copy and paste: *Connor used to have what looked like mini-seizures as a baby. They were " pee shivers " his central nervous system was immature and he was " shivering " when he peed. I NEVER would have heard of such a thing if I hadn't mentioned it to my Dr.* Many other people responded that their babies did this as well, and interestingly enough they were all boys. Not sure how medically accurate it is, but just figured I'd share considering a few moms of boys on this board have brought this up now. , mom to Hannah, DOCband #3 3/30 Cape COd, Ma --- In Plagiocephaly , " cjwrcw " <michele_walsh@y...> wrote: > I recall not too long ago seeing some posts about babies with > helmets/bands having " shivers " ? Guest guest
Thanks, . Pee shivers?! How odd, huh? That could be it, LOL. It passed briefly through my mind that it might be some sort of pettit mal seizure, yet I recalled seeing some postings here about some sort of shivers in some banded babies. At the time, I passed it over, and thought it odd and likely unrelated. Now it happened to us! Not sure I think it has anything to do with this situation, but just hoped to find and review what was discussed here about them. If fevers can trigger seizure, could redirectiong and changing head shape maybe cause some little burst of odd activity? I mean, the brain would definatley be shifting some with the changing skull shape. Whatever I read here, the person had mentioned to a doctor who said it was certainly unrelated to banding(not that I would be convinced of that). So, when I noticed this, I recalled that conversation. Hoping whomever it happened to notices this as well. mish > > I recall not too long ago seeing some posts about babies with > > helmets/bands having " shivers " ? Guest guest
Thanks ! That is really interesting. Guest guest
Here are the posts I think you're talking about: From: Krissy Cook <krissycook@...> Date: Sun Jun 13, 2004 5:33 pm Subject: Re: Too Scared to Band!!! ADVERTISEMENT Hi Tracey- I am so sorry about your experience. It is very concerning. To answer some of your questions: My son started to shiver when he 1st got his helmet. It would come and go for just a second. It would stop him from playing though and I got very concerned. Well, to make a long story short. We ended up getting an EEG and everything came out okay. My husband an I met up with a Neurologist and he said he would have to catch the shiver in action to see if he has been having seizures. He recommend us to video tape him. I also asked, " well, what if it is a seizure- what do you do for them? He said, " we medicate " . I said is there any reaction to medication? He said, " yes, in all medication there is reactions " . I asked, " what if he is having seizures and we don't medicate and leave them alone. It is not like he is convulsing on the floor or anything? " He said, " there has never been a study if it is better to medicate or leave alone. " So, he couldn't answer the question. I couldn't believe they don't know this.... Well, anyways we opted to let nature take its course and just see if these shivers go away. They did! didn't shiver for over 2 weeks. He has done a little shiver here and there lately because he had his helmet off for a few days because he had a fever. When he has had it back on, he has had a few shivers. I think they will go away. My husband and mine's theory is that it is temp. related. The body is hot on the head and cool on the body. It is like a little chill. The doctors all say it is not helmet related, but keeping it off for a few days and having him wear it for a while they disappeared. My husband would predict the shivers. It seemed when the A/C would come on in the house would shiver just after the breeze would hit him. So, I think Gracie will stop in a few weeks, If they get bad, I would get an EEG done. That is only if they are more frequent and longer! *********************** From: " Amy in MN " <skisum88@...> Date: Tue Jun 8, 2004 10:39 am Subject: KRISSY - regarding shivers ADVERTISEMENT BUMP > > > > > I recall not too long ago seeing some posts about babies with > > > helmets/bands having " shivers " ?
