I haven't posted in awhile, but have read many. Wanted to let everyone know

we lost our precious Sat. 11/11/00. It was very unexpected and took

us all by surprise. He was 4 1/2 yrs old. He had PETubes put in on Tues last

wk and did great. He ran around the ICU/TCU unit making everyone laugh. I was

even able to bring him home the same day. This did not happen very often as

he was still vent dependent. Anyway, while I was at the Dr. on Wed. with his

sick twin, developed fever and needed O2. This was not too unusual

post-op. His fever was not going down with Tylenol every 4hrs, so at 11pm I

notified the Dr. It was decided to give him his next dose of Tylenol and call

the Dr. in 1 hr. We also had a new nurse that night. Alittle after midnight

he started seizing. I had the nurse start bagging him and called 911.

does not have seizures. Only one other time with fever. The paramedics could

not get a line started to give Valium IV so they gave it rectal. The seizures

continued. Once in the ER they gave 4 different anti seizure meds twice

before any sign of relief was noted. By this time he had been seizing for

over 1 1/2 hrs. A CT of his head was done and he was sent to ICU. He began

seizing again and they had to give multiple meds to control them. The next

day brought events I will never forget. His blood pressure dropped and he

ended up on 4-5 IV drugs to maintain a blood pressure. This was not enough

and he needed fluids and blood products to bring it up. He started bleeding

everywhere from DIC because his blood stopped clotting. His liver enzymes

were real elevated. He then went into ARDS and was on maximum vent support

with nitric oxyde added for gas exchange. Still nothing was helping. They

just kept giving more flluids and plasma and platelettes. Then he started

having multi organ failure. By Fri. evening my husband and I decided that was

enough and asked the Dr. to stop. They stopped all the drugs and fluids and

blood prods and we bathed him and held him and most of our family was there.

We had a circle of prayer. They put him in a big bed and put us in a large

room. We took turns sleeping with him that night. He maintained a low blood

pressure for 12 hrs. Once the rest of the family was in to say goodbye and we

took his twin in to say goodbye then changes on the vent were made. Slowly he

started slipping away. Then the pressure on the vent was lowered and that was

the end. It was very peaceful and beautiful. The funeral was beautiful and I

will tell more later. Time to say good night.

Dear Vicki,

I can't imagine what your family must be going through right now. I don't

know if it's any help, but they say God picks the best and the brightest so

Vicki, I am so sorry to hear about your loss. As a nurse I know how frantic

situations such as you experienced with can get. It's wonderful that you

could take

some control of the situation and stay focused on your son and give him such a

peaceful and loving passing on. Sharon

Thank you to everyone for your condolences and prayers. I cannot express

what I am feeling right now except an emptiness and fulfillment all at one

time. I am sure I will be able to speak more of it later, but now it is

difficult.
