Welcome aboard, Bree! I take 500mg of metformin each day. The side

effects I experienced was diarrhea the first couple of days (some

experience longer, more servere diarrhea) and I feel weepy, but the

weepiness seems to be lessening. It affects the hormones in women

slightly, but I can't explain how.

I hope this helps you and I also hope the med doesn't affect your

anxiety disorder. That's about the worst feeling there is!

bree - take a deep breath. It is overwhelming but as you get more

information you will start to feel better. I understand the tears and the

anxiety. You

are right that diet (and exercise) are forms of treatment, along with meds.

Get the education by taking a class at the local hospital and/or seeing a

nutritionist. Take advantage of whatever is available. My doctor let me try

diet

alone for 3 months before starting me on metformin. I started on 500 mg and

then it was upped to 1000. My sugars were a lot higher than yours when I

started. My doctor just had a different approach but if you feel uncomfortable

then be assertive and maybe see another doctor. Once you get more information

you'll know what questions to ask. I had to get assertive with my doctor who I

felt was not paying enough attention to the situation. I got a referral to a

specialist and finally appropriate treatment for my situation. You have to

advocate for yourself. But for now, with the initial shock, just relax and

know that this is completely controllable. Your life will go forward and if you

take care of it, with little or no problems. Read read read. I highly

recommend getting a copy of " The First Year Type 2 Diabetes " by Gretchen Becker.

It's really comprehensive and easy to read. And post here often - there are

always plenty of people willing to help.

Hi there,

Please dont type all in caps, it's considered to be shouting, and

it's also hard to read!

I take metformin and glyburide separately as they dont come in one

pill here in Ontario just yet.

I was so mad when I found out I have diabetes, I never had denial but

a lot of anger that took a long time to dissipate. It's been 4.5 yrs

now so I am used to this, and have adapted my life around it, and it

wasn't all that hard, really. It does beat the alternative of not

taking care of myself or not knowing what is wrong with me.

If you are drinking Pepsi with sugar in it, I hope you can learn to

like diet Pepsi as the sugared kind is now a no no for you. I dont

think the caffeine is such a big issue.

Do what your doc says, go to him/her with your questions, read a lot,

see the diabetic educator in your area, check your blood, take your

pills. Read, read and read some more about this. Knowledge is

power. This is not a death sentence unless you ignore it. So try to

keep your chin up, post here any time you want, we will try to help

you!

Hi Bree,

The good news that comes out of this diagnosis is that 1. You've just

found a bunch of new friends on this list, and 2. You have a chance

to be healthier than you ever have - no, really!

First thing: You are on extended release (1 per day), I'm on not-

extended release (for lack of a better word) so I take a pill before

each meal. I'm sure that someone else on the list is taking the same

as you and will be able to give you some idea of the effects.

Good idea to wait until hubby is home, it is (really) unlikely that

anything could go wrong, but always better to be safe than sorry,

especially if you get nervous about meds.

Give yourself a couple of days to process the diagnosis - and know

that there are tons of people on this list who live happy and

fulfilling lives, diabetic or not. It isn't as bad as you think. Yes,

there will be changes, but this isn't the end of things, life just

carries on.

As far as Pepsi...do they do a Caffeine free diet? I think I have

seen it. That is okay, diet pop is our friend :)

It is great that you got on and ordered the meter - don't forget that

you will also need to have testing strips for it. Will you provider

send them with the meter or will you have to buy them? Does your

provider need a prescription for the strips in order for them to

cover the cost? Things to ask them if you're not sure.

Above all, try to keep your stress level down while you try to sort

everything out. Stress pushes bgs (blood-glucose) up so try not to

let no knowing everything make you panic. You can't expect to know

everything about diabetes in the first few days, everyone here is

still learning from one another and from doctors.

We're here for you and for each other, you will get the hang of this.

There is often a period of anger, frustration and denial (good thing

that you are getting it all out of your system right away teehee).

Give it a couple of days, then start looking on the web and at the

library to get an idea of how to change your food choices and your

exercise to help you stay healthy.

A1c test (A1c or HbA1c). This is a blood test that gives an average of what
