TV Game show: Questions about Stigma and Discrimination

Dear Forum members,

ISTV Network(Manipur, India), an independent pvt. cable network of

which I am the news editor of its news program-ISTV News, has been

awarded a project by the World Bank under its South Asia Regional

Development Market Place under the theme Tackling HIV/AIDS " Stigma

and Discrimination. "

We are amongst 26 other organisations from 9 SA countires who have been chosen

for our innovative ideas in tackling HIV/AIDS. My project essentially is a game

show structured around questions related to HIV/AIDS- specially discrimination

and stigma.

The show will run for 68 episodes and we have kept the first prize a Car to

attract more participants and viewers.

While I have my own bank of questions I would appreciate if members

would give me feedback on areas where they would like questions to

be framed upon.

My questions are not meant to flumox participants but rather encourage them and

participate.

Some sample questions are -will you get HIV if you eat together? or People with

AIDS should be kept apart- Yes or No?.

All questions will be fastest finger first and there will be two

contestants every round. We go on air sometime in August 2008.

I would like to believe that this is the first Game show of its kind

but if you have come across any similar Game show I would love to

hear about them and draw some lessons before we go on air.

Though restricted to my viewers in Manipur, if the program works there are

chances of being replicated in your respective areas in your language(I am not

promising it though).

In response to the following posting..it looks like a great

initiative that hold great promise. But the questions would need

concise structuring. Asking open ended questions that can also be

answered as either yes or no acording to the opinion of the person

should be avoided:

For example, if participants are to be asked " will sex education among young

people help in decreasing HIV " can be answered yes but some will say no too..the

liberals will say yes, the orthodox will say no...same with " should there be

mandatory HIV testing? "

it would do well to focus on factual information and knowledge

levels...questions regarding bringing down stigma and discrimination

looks Ok on paper format..but if content is not chalked out

properly,the program will just be a game show and nothing else.

If the program format can be used to raise the bar of committment and

awareness it would be great to invite MLAs and Ministers who are now

part of the Legislators Forum on AIDS (Manipur) and ases how well

they know..not the technical know how..but the isses..that would be

fun!

Questions on rights and service delivery can be included:

For instance, " Can program implementers take blood samples from minor

children without informed and signed consent of parents/gaurdians " . This would

draw attention to the incident that happened sometime in Imphal in January 2008.

The possibilities are endles if the prtogram is really to be a change

agent, but if it is to be for eye ball consumption,then the usual

questions will do just as well.

The idea is definitely a novel and revolutionary one- and will forge greater

aceptance of PLHIV. However, the participants may give false reponses to win

prizes- AND THE GAP IN LIP-SERVICE AND PRACTICE MAY NOT BE BRIDGED.

 

I have a suggestion that PLHIV could narrate their stories of suffering, how

they got support and then the persons supporting could be introduced as role

models and honoured. What consitutes S & D- The issue needs to be touched- Breach

of Confidentiality in hospital settings and many other issues need to be

researched properly in your context.
