Guest guest
It's been said that once it was possible to know the sum of human knowledge, and that now it's impossible to know all about one subject. Public safety communications is no different. There are less and less generalists when it comes to administrators. True, many of us have to be to fill our roles, but even so many of us feel more comfortable with certain aspects of management, technology, and planning. One of our glaring errors is the inability to out-distance technology, which does put us in a knee-jerk reactionary position many times. Take a look at wireless, for example. I can't remember anything that has had a bigger impact, outside of the widespread use of computers in our profession. Now, look around at VOIP and picture phones and get ready to have that AOL voice change from " You've got mail " to " You've got a 9-1-1 call " . > > We've made this huge push toward 9-1-1 over the years, and I > > don't believe the powers that be realized how much it would > > change the dispatch function. > > Weintraut > ******************************************************************** > My feelings are that the push was done without a lot of thought on long term > effects on the public, officers, dispatchers, and most important, > technology. > > Almost knee-jerk reactions to perceived pressure. Guest guest
I agree with this response. In days gone by, we had a lot of waiting for info on tags, dl's, etc. Subject was long long gone into another world by the time we got info back that he was suspended or even worst that he was wanted. Technical knowledge today is great and ever so fast. Vickie R. charvick@... <lg snip> And we had a teletype machine and had to send hard copy messages to other states to get DMV info and it sometimes took days to get an answer, especially since DMVs were usually closed on weekends, and we liked it. They didn't have to wait 2 days to get out of state regs or DL. Iowa State Patrol Communications, Cedar Rapids Werling NØXZY Anamosa, IA scott@... Guest guest
I can try. I have the hard copy at home that I saved for my friend to use in her classes. What might be easiest is to give you the date/paper/page citation and just type in the full text. (Our newspaper's online archives are only free to subscribers, which I am but I'm guessing you are not...LOL since we're several states apart!) > > > Date: 2003/12/22 Mon PM 03:27:12 EST > To: <911console > > Subject: Re: 911:: Dispatch Environment > > > able to email a friend and have them call a tow truck for him.
