Those who are familiar with sound will know that the louder a sound is, the more difficult it is to discriminate the differences between it and some other sounds. Take the sounds B & P. The difference is that one is voiced and one unvoiced. When you talk louder you're actually adding voice to the unvoiced P to make it louder so what you're doing is reducing the differences between the two making them more difficult to discriminate.
