Guest guest
Speaking of port-a-caths, has anyone had problems with theirs not giving up blood? I've had mine in for 7 months and was using it 1x every week. It was working fine all that time, but the past two blood draws and infusions have been problematic. The nurse had me raise my arm and wave like the Queen and she was able to finally get some blood out of it. The tubing just doesn't feel right and hurts. I think I need to get this yanked out. Suggestions??? ~Amber Charlotte........I had a port-a-cath done before I started chemo.

Guest guest
Hi Cheryl: How'd they know you had a clot? That's what I'm worried about. Since I've decided not to have any more chemo, I think I should just get mine yanked (ouch!!!) out too. ~Amber i had problem with blood a lot i have to rise my arm and than put my arm over my head and etc but ,i had that proiblemn for awhile than clear up sometimes they would have to put saline to open lines finally dr said yank it out they kept it in me for 2 yrs after chemo and when it kept giving problem just decide to take out was the line was getting stop up a lot how long you been haveing the cat chreyl Re: Port-a-cath, a Speaking of port-a-caths, has anyone had problems with theirs not giving up blood? Guest guest
Sometimes the end of the tube suctions up against the side of the vein. That's why moving your arm will sometimes dislodge it. Guest guest
That makes perfect sense . Thanks for the info. Wonder if massaging the area would help? ~Amber Sometimes the end of the tube suctions up against the side of the vein. That's why moving your arm will sometimes dislodge it. Guest guest
It's not red or swollen and I do have it flushed every week. Antibiotics probably wouldn't be a bad idea either (low dose doxy or something like that). I really don't want to take it out right now because I have no veins left that are useable for anything :-( I'll just see how this cloggy line behaves this week. ~Amber are you going every month to get it wash out because you have to have th eline open if you keeping it you need to get it wash out if its red and like swollen i have check now i never had a clot but infection set in one time and were port a cat was was red and itchy and thye put me on antibodics if you not comfy with it get it out i was because i had horrible veins if it wouldnt of kept clogging up i would kept mine but it just stay clog up meant the line was clogging and not open that could be your problem not neccessary it a clot but the line might be closing up so i go get it check they kept mine for 2 yrs because dr said if you going to get cance rback usally within 2 yrs and i didnt have no breakaage of cancer after my 2 yr mark and took it out i still miss my port but i didnt have clots just i think it could be clogging up espically if you saying it hurting go get it check please they might need to wash it out cheryl Re: Port-a-cath, a Speaking of port-a-caths, has anyone had problems with theirs not giving up blood? Guest guest
I've had my port-a-cath in since the beginning of November and use it every other week for chemo. It has never given up any blood - no matter how hard they try. I had to wave my arms too, and cough etc, but no go. It doesn't bother me though. In fact the first week, they sent me for xrays to make sure it was still in place. It was. Lynn > Speaking of port-a-caths, has anyone had problems with theirs not giving up blood? Guest guest
Hi Lynn: Oh, that's so frustrating it won't give up any blood for you :-( I'm sorry you have to get poked twice because of it. One of the nurses told me that patients with chronic coughing problems (me) usually have problems with their ports. So coughing won't help mine! ~Amber > I've had my port-a-cath in since the beginning of November and use it > every other week for chemo.
