T dispatcher's action saves man who fell

By Globe Staff and Wires, 6/7/2003

An MBTA dispatcher was credited with saving the life of a man who fell

onto a subway track yesterday, struck his head, and passed out,

officials said. Other passengers saw the man fall, but did nothing,

authorities said. Dan Nascarella, a rapid transit dispatcher at the T's

Operations and Control Center in Boston, stopped trains in both

directions after catching a glimpse of something falling onto the

tracks on a television monitor. Nascarella told his supervisor that he

believed he saw something fall into the pit at Broadway station about

1:30 p.m.,but did not know which track. Nearby passengers did not

react, said Hogan, the OCC's chief. Unsure where the man had

fallen, Nascarella stopped trains in both directions while waiting for

help, which T officials said came in minutes. Trains were running

within six minutes of the victim being pulled from the tracks. The

condition of the victim, whose name was not released, was unknown.
