Welcome to the group. The hear part is over. I'm happy to hear did OK with the casting.

You will want to dress in less while his body adjusts to always wearing a "hat". Depending on where you live staying in the a/c may be necessary. Follow CTI's guidelines for wear and cleaning. be careful with how much alcohol you use to clean the band. Use just enough to get the cleaning cloth (whatever it may be - rough wash clothes work well) damp and then use muscle to scrub. Make sure the band is dry and 's head is dry before you put it back on. The sun works well for drying. Initially may sweat (a lot). Take the band off frequently and dry it and 's head.

The babis really do adjust quicker than the parents. LOL Also, it helps to decorate the band. It makes it look less medical. There are tons of adorable bands in the photos section and some tips inthe files section.

Let us know how his fitting goes on Friday.

Hi all!My son will be getting his DocBand on Friday. He has plagio due to tort. He has been in PT since 2m (he is now 7m)and his tort is about 95% resolved. The right side of his face (cheek/forehead) is pushed a bit forward, his ear is obviously forward, and he is flat behind his ear. As expected, casting was no fun. The poor baby cried himself to sleep only to be awakened when they sat him up to do the back of his head. But shortly after, he was happy again.Any suggestions on helping him adjust to wearing the band would be appreciated. From everything I've read, the kids seem to adjust pretty easily - I hope this is true ;)Thanks,, mom to For more plagio info

Welcome to the group!

I am also a mom to a ! I hope all goes well this Friday and your

adjusts well.

Tips:

Red spots- if they don't go away within the hour- and are still really

bright. Leave the helmet off until you go back to the Orthotist for a

fitting (cut the foam out).Bad red spots can cause skin break down

since their skin is so sensitive.

Cleaning- 91% alcohol with and shampoo. It takes the

smell out. Make sure you get the soap suds out of the helmet real

good. I use the hair dryer to dry it or the ceiling fan. I usually

clean it when has his bath.

Fever- NO HELMET! Any fever could bring the fever up to dangerous

areas. Take the helmet off until the baby is better.

No powders, Lotions, or creams on head- could cause problems.

Decorate the helmet immediately because you will take to it better and

the people around him. It won't look so medicinal.

The casting is the worse, so you have that behind you. took

awhile to adjust to sleeping with it, but a friend's daughter slept

with it immediately. I wish you the best!

Howdy and Welcome!

Krissy had lots of great advice. Be prepared w/ some hydrocortisone

(sp?) cream incase he DOES experience some skin breakdown. Also

inquire about using ZeaSorb w/ the helmet. I can't remember if it's

the DocBand that approves this or if it's another brand of helmet,

but this may help w/ sweating. Check w/ your orthotist FIRST.

Also, if it's warm where you live, dress him in light clothing, even

onsies for the first week until his body adjusts to the helmet. He

may experience heavy sweating at first, but once his body acclimates

to the helmet, this usually subsides after some time. Also, Aveeno

Baby Shampoo is supposed to be an excellent wash for his hair, no

chemicals, no residue, no nothing. I would check first on using a

hair dryer to dry the helmet, as it may change the texture of the

foam inside from overheating if you are not careful.... again, check

w/ your orthotist on how to clean the band. Also, the clear backed

stickers are the best for decorating, they come off the easiest when

you want to change the theme of the helmet. And yes, it is

completely OK to put his first name on the band. Lots of parents

do! Also, you can use a fan in his room if it's warm, just use it

to circulate the air, don't have it directly on him. It'll also

provide a nice " white noise " effect and may help his sleep better.

If he starts crying with the helmet on (which may be unusual but

DOES happen) take the band off and check for redness. The helmet

may even just be a tad too tight. Either way, don't get

frustrated. You may need to get a quick adjustment from the

orthotist if you see redness that lasts longer than 30 minutes/1

hour. If he still wants to take the helmet off or is upset wearing

it, you can slip it on him after he goes to sleep. Usually it never

comes to that, but some parents have had to do that.

Let us know how adjusts and please post pics once you get it

all decorated!

Actually CTI will instruct you to only use alcohol to clean the DOC band. Some other helmets and bands can use other products. Use the sweet smelling shampoo on 's head. Make sure both are dry before putting the band back on.
