Debbie,

I just looked again and I do see some improvement starting. I think

the plan you have is the best way to go.

Thank you Carol. I am going to take photos tomorrow and get them up

this weekend. I don't think I'm imaging the progress. I want the

best for her and if I thought that she really needed it now, we would

be there in a heartbeat casting her. I'll keep you posted.

Thankyou, Debbie and Brielle

Also, if CT is not recommending it - then that's good b/c the doctor

I saw expressed that CT is sometimes too quick to band and it is

important to treat what caused it if possible such as extensive pt

for tort b/c banding alone may fix the flatness but if the child

still has tort then he will regress. anyways, we will definitely

support whatever decision you make - you clearly have your childs

best interest at heart and seem to be doing everything possible!!

Hi. CT did recommend that we band Brielle Here measurements were

7mm between fullest point to flatter point. 3mm difference midface

ear to eye and 5mm difference ear to base of nose. The ortho said

that she was concernece with the ears and back of her head. My

doctors say to wait, so that is why I'm confused. Where are you from

and what doctor said that CT is sometimes to quick to band? Thanks,

Well this is a first for me. Cranial Tech has an EXCELLENT reputation

and turn away many, many parents whose babies are too mild to band.

In order for a DOCband to work there HAS to be a certain degreee of

flatness. If a baby is too mild there won't be any holding point,

making it impossible for an active band to work.

I wonder how much this doctor really knows about Cranial Tech, I

don't think very much.

I don't think he was trying to diminish Cranial Tech's rep - he was

just emphasizing the fact that banding alone and banding too early

is not enough if the plagio is caused by torticollus - b/c you'll

end up with regression if the tort is not addressed. He actually

agreed that they have a great reputation and recommended it, along

with a few others in my area. Although, it does seem that everyone

who has used Cranial Tech is very happy with them which is very

comforting. Also my experience with them thus far (we haven't got

to casting yet) has been great - they have been very helpful in

trying to get ins to pay and providing me informative paperwork and

general support - I do think it is an advantage that this is all

they do and I am glad to hear that they turn away people who don't

need it. Thanks for the info!!

Toral,

I would agree with . Ct has been the leader in this treatment

all along and thier experience is based on many years of research and

studies. Any time you google any info. about plagio, you come up with

a study to back it done by the research team from CT. I think what

some may percieve as quick to band, is actually CT knowing that the

window of opportunity for the best possible correction is very small

and isn't that what thier product is all about. You have to remember

most docs are just learning about this and some are just going to be

against it all together, and feel the need to undermine anything that

goes against what they have been recommending for thier patients so

they don't look bad.

Your doctor is right that treating plagio isnt' going to " fix " the

tort too. Cranial Tech's orthotists are either Pt's or OT's though

and are not only aware of this, but they'll teach you the

stretches. Even though tort was ruled out in my daughter they still

recommended doing the stretches. And yes, they do have a great

reputation, which wouldn't be the case if they banded needlessly.

Hi Debbie,

I have not read all the replies to your post but I wanted

to reply to you because I am in the Philly area. I wanted

to share my experiance. My son got a starband about six

weeks ago. He was 7 and half months old. We got the band

from Harry J. Lawall & Son in Philidelphia. It was great because

they have a scanner and so no casting. In just six weeks we have

seen tremendous results and are very happy we banded. Anyways, Our

son was much older then your son and so we strongly felt we needed to

band sooner then later. We felt the neurosurgeon at CHOP to

be very anti-band. They (especially the nurse practioner there)

harped on repostioning even after we told them we wanted to band. We

were not impressed but we did talk them into giving us the

prescription anyways. We were just back for his follow up visit and

they were happy with his progress.

That being said your DD is still young and I would keep with your plan

to continue repositioning. You can still choose to band after your DD

is 6 months. In the end we banded for three reason, 1. We were not

happy with his head shape and he had noticeable assemtry.

2. We felt repositioning would not guarentee correction or be as

effective at our son's age as the helmet.

3. Our insurance covered most of the cost. We had only to pay 875

dollars out of pocket.

We found it to be a very hard decision and we found the professionals

were not much help to us in making the decision. In the end we went

on our instincts.

If you have any questions for a fellow Philly area mom just email me :)

Take Care!

Patti
